Knock knock

The sudden noise woke me up, as water splashed around from my jolt.

"You okay in there?" Levi yelled.

"Uh, yeah!" I weakly yelled back. "I guess I dozed off..."

That's when the door began to open. Fear filled my head as Levi walked in, his button down shirt still on him, but multiple buttons were undone. For a moment, our eyes met, and even though I knew he couldn't see my naked body in the water from his angle, I still used my hands to cover myself.

He had a neatly folded towel in his hand, which he set on the bathroom counter. That's when I realized I forgot to bring one in.

"You'll probably need that..." Levi said as he walked out, leaving the door slightly cracked.

I used the last bit of strength I had left to pull myself out of the bathtub and grabbed the towel he left in there for me, wrapping it around my body.

I changed into some pajamas, and got myself ready to go back to sleep again. That's when I remembered. I'd be laying next to my new sleeping buddy soon.

That's not going to be awkward at all.

Once I was done in the bathroom, I walked out and walked into our bedroom. Levi had already claimed a side on the bed. He laid atop the sheets, his shirt was now completely off, but his pants were still on. He held a book in his hands, his back propped up against the headboard, and his legs crossed at the ankles.

There was plenty of room for me on the other side, so I made my way over as Levi closed his book. He didn't say anything. He just set the book down, and got up, probably waiting for his turn in the bathroom.

That's when I the idea struck me. I'll make him some tea. I'd enjoy that too, actually.

I grabbed the book I was working on from the bookshelf and set it down on the bed next to Levi's, ready to read it once I was done in the kitchen.

I set a pot to boil and went to the pantry, where I had already stocked it with black tea, Levi's favorite. So far, doing stuff for him fulfilled me, so I was at peace.

That's when I realized he was already done showering.

For a clean freak, he sure showers fast...

I poured the two cups of tea and set one down on his nightstand. I then walked over to my new side of the bed and got in under the covers, sitting up against the headboard like Levi was. I took a sip of the warm tea, and began to read as well.

I hoped that this would help ease the awkward tension I was dreading.

Levi walked into the room, he wore a grey long-sleeved shirt and some pants. His eyes darted to the tea, and then to me.

"I made you a cup..." I said to him.

He didn't say anything, but got back into the same position I had found him in. The house was still, and so was the night. We had the lamps lit, and a little bit of moonlight filled the room.

He took a sip of his tea, and let out a long breath.

"Thank you." He said.

I looked over at him, the teacup in his hand, just like he always held it.

"Anytime." I said quietly as I continued reading. Even though my eyes were on the page, my now overactive brain went elsewhere. I knew this was weird for him, and I hoped he wouldn't resent me for it. I also knew he never slept in a bed, so he was trying, for me.

After a little bit of silence he spoke up again.

"Listen." He said as I looked at him, his gaze gentle. "I have problems sleeping."

I wasn't surprised.

"It's okay. I do too." I told him. Most nights I slept fine, but I was plagued by horrible nightmares, and it would usually take me at least an hour or two to fall asleep.

He gave me a faint smile, since we were both troubled in the same way. He knew he could trust me.

I held my tea cup out to him, so that I could make a small toast. He dinged the cup against mine softly. "To a happy marriage?" I said, trying to ease the air around us.

"Sure, you moron." He said as he took a sip. I giggled, since I knew he meant well, and continued reading, silence once again filling the room.

For a couple of hours, the only noise audible in the house, was the soft ripple of pages turning, and a slurpy sip here and there. Even though, that ceased once he and I got done with our tea.

Eventually, I could feel my eyes growing heavy. I had just two chapters left in my novel, so I decided to finish and then try and get some sleep.

Even though I was spent, the anticipation from falling asleep next to Levi kept me awake for longer than I thought.

I tried to prolong it, but eventually, I turned the final page to my book, and gently set it down on my nightstand when I finished. Levi took notice, and closed his book as well, even though he wasn't done.

"You can keep reading, Levi. It won't bother me." I said as I turned out my light.

"You sure?" Levi asked.

"Mhm..." I encouraged. The last thing I wanted was for him to just lay there wide awake.

"I can go to another roo-" He said before I cut him off.

"No, please stay." I told him, our tired eyes meeting once more.

I knew having him there would help me sleep better, even though his presence made me nervous. Plus, I had to get used to it eventually.

Deep in my heart, I wanted to feel his lips on mine again, but I knew that would just be weird. So I decided something more subtle would be best.

I leaned in while he looked at me, aiming for his cheek, just to give him a gentle kiss goodnight. I didn't know if he'd like the affection, so I thought I'd at least give it a shot.

That's when he made a sudden move, and before I could react, his lips were on mine, just like I had hoped.

My heart skipped a beat, since I wasn't expecting that from him.

For a moment, our bodies were frozen, but once we realized what we were doing, we calmed down for a bit. My hand found its way to his chest, as I softly felt the outline of his muscles beneath his shirt. His hand found my thigh, as he gently rested it on me.

Our lips moved nicely together, it only lasting a little bit longer than the one we had shared before.

When we pulled away, I couldn't help but smile. Although he quickly looked down, back at his book as if nothing had really happened.

"Goodnight." I whispered, as I curled up my body facing his. I kept my hand on him for just a little longer, and then I let it fall, so that I could give him space as he continued to read.

"'Night..." He whispered back to me.

My heart was so full, that I ended up falling asleep faster than I ever had in my recent years.

It was hard for me to understand just what he was doing to me, but I couldn't help but want more...
