"You're late. Again" My boss comments as I step through the door.
"I'm ten minutes late Dad. Don't get your panties in a twist there was traffic on the highway" walking straight past my father I head to the back of the bakery.
Sometimes I wish I had put up more of a fight with my parents and went to college. The lord knows how annoying it is working with my family.
I mean come on I live with you guys then I have to come to work and spend all day with you. Can I get a break already! I'm not getting paid enough to deal with them 24/7.
Pulling my hair up into a bun I put on my pink apron over my white uniform and change into my working shoes.
Its 6:40 which means I have twenty minutes before I have to open up the shop, put on my plastic smile and deal with the oh so lovely druggies craving their morning cup of coffee.
You'd be surprised at how cranky business people can get when they haven't had their cup of coffee in the morning. Everybody knows that Kisses serves the best coffee in town, it's been that way since 1985.
So back in the day my Dad use to operate a cart downtown. He served a mean cup of coffee and delicious pastries to go with it. It didn't really have a name back then you know he just called it Jerry's. Anyways, as business started to bloom one of his faithful customers made an investment in him and thus 'Kisses' was born.
My mom came up with the name (it explains a lot trust me), as a matter of fact the whole name kisses came from me.
Apparently whenever I was around people as a baby I would always make kissy faces at them and one night as my parents were trying to come up with a name I crawled up to my mom and started planted kisses all over.
The rest was history and henceforth came the name 'kisses'.
My mom dealt with the decorating (she's an interior decorator) and my dad dealt with the baking. The entire shop was cute, or so the customers thought. And as long as the customers are happy then daddy is happy and if daddy is happy that means his little princess is happy.
Pink and white stripes covered the walls of the bakery, with matching pink tables and white tiles. The name kisses was sprawled off across the left wall in cursive and a blown up baby picture of me blowing a kiss up at the camera was placed below it.
On the other side hung all the achievements of the bakery and plaques that kisses had received over the years.
Pictures from our fundraisers and people making donations were hung in the corner. The entire place looks good. It has a nice feel to it, and soon one day it will be all mine.
6:50, alright ten more minutes, I've got time I think to myself. After quickly wiping down the tables, chairs and counters I ran back to my dad's office.
"Dad we need to talk"
"You've got five minutes before the bakery opens so make it fast." I raised my eyebrow then frowned at his bland business like tone. Once he saw my frown he quickly rephrased his response.
"I'm sorry princess what can I do for you?"
"I need a raise"
"I'm sorry but-"
"No daddy please I'm 21 I need my own place. That's not gonna happen if I'm still stuck with the same pay I've been getting for the past three years."
"Le-"
"Please daddy I'm growing up. I'm not a little girl anymore. I'll be 22 next year" I said pouting.
"Fine but when you move out you won't be getting your allowance anymore"
"THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU SO MUCH DADDY" I squealed running over to his chair before giving him a big hug.
I told you I always get what I want.
Today was Monday which meant that this was one of our busiest mornings. Oh how I hate Mondays. The autumn wind was picking up and it was getting much chiller outside. Which meant more people would be making their way into our shop on a regular basis.
When 7 o'clock stroke I turned over the sign from closed to open. By now all of the other employees were in the back and the aroma of pastries in the oven filled the room.
Taking my place behind the counter I begin to rearrange the place cards. I was the only one who worked out front behind the counter unless I asked someone to cover my shift.
I was the face of the shop and so daddy made sure I was always out front. Plus I was beautiful who wouldn't want to see this face as soon as they entered.
"Hey Lea" one of the bakers said making her way up to me
"Hello there Mrs. Hall" I teased wiggling my eyebrows. She had just recently gotten married. Poor girl.
"Mr.Ellis asked for his morning delivery" she said
"OK" I replied not sure why she was telling me this
"I'm telling you this because he asked for you to deliver it."
"Why me" I whined rolling my eyes. "I don't wanna walk so far, why can't he have his assistant come pick it up like he always does"
"Can you do it for me please jess?" I begged
"Nope, sorry" she apologized
"Why not" I complained
"Because he asked for you to deliver it" My dad answered butting in "don't keep him waiting"
I rolled my eyes then took the paper with his order from Jess.
2 cups of dark coffee no sugar
1 cappuccino muffin
"You can go on in" his assistant smiled at me while gesturing towards the back where his office must be.
"Damn right I can" I mumbled under my breath. I was pissed as fuck. This man's office was on the damn top floor and after putting me through all that trouble of walking up to his building and riding the elevator 20 flours up I couldn't just drop it off at his assistance desk he wanted me to walk to his office and serve it to him like some damn maid.
"This old man is lucky he donates a lot of money to the bakery or I would have given him a piece of my damn mind" I ramble on storming towards his door. Stopping right outside it I take a deep breath, regain my composure, plaster on a big smile then barge straight into his office.
My mouth drops open and for a few seconds I stand there a bit wide eyed at the sight in front of me. My face instantly reddens and I drop the muffin.
"Sorry wrong office!" I squeak slamming the door behind me after grabbing up the paper bag.
"Shit!" I hear someone cuss from inside.
Did I mention how much I love Mondays?
