I lifted my shirt and slowly removed the bandages, revealing the big red claw scratch across my stomach. You could tell, that it was healing, but sadly not too much.
I heard a quiet gasp behind me and the door did a little squeak, "sorry, I didn't know you were changing." A familiar voice spoke from behind the door. I quickly wrapped my bandages back into place while forcing a chuckle, "no, I wasn't changing, you can come in."
Julieta gave me her usual warm smile with eyes full of care. She noticed the bandages.
"How is the wound?" She let a hand rest on her chest in addition to leaning her head a bit to the left with a concerned expression.
"Better. Still hurts a bit, when I swallow, but it's fine." I explained, turning my back on the mirror.
"That's good to hear." She closed the door behind her. "I was wondering, since you got a wheelchair, if you'd like to eat dinner with the rest of us? I couldn't help, but thinking it seems a bit lonely up here..." she looked around.
"But, I can't eat..." I felt sorry for turning her down so quickly.
"I know cariña, but I think that joining us at the dinner table, would be good for you." She took a step closer to me and bend down on her knees, to get on my level of eye contact. She took my hands into her's.
"And honestly, I think it's a bit depressing that you're stuck up here all day. It must be getting a bit boring for you?" She looked into my eyes. "Actually, it's not that boring, I mean, I know how to entertain myself. Plus, I get visits all the time..."
"-A bit too much, if you ask me" I joked. "-don't worry about me, Julieta." I tried to change the mood of the subject, "and I also got your awesome food, A+ for the arepas you gave me yesterday, by the way" I gave her a big grin, making her smile back at me.
"I'm glad you're happy here. I know you've been getting plenty along with my daughters, and that's truly more than I could ask for." She squeezed my hands, I replied with a reassuring smile.
"How about, we invite your parents over for dinner too? Would that be okay?" She tilted her head a bit to the side.
"Yes! I think they would love to join us!" I answered without hesitation.
"Great." She gave my hands one last squeeze, before getting up, heading towards the door. "I'll leave you be now" she chuckled a bit to herself and headed back to the door."Wait!" I shouted, making her stop in her tracks. She turned to look at me with curious eyes.
"Yes, y/n?"
"Thank you for saving my life." And I meant those words at the bottom of my heart. Honestly, I don't know what I would do, if she wasn't here right now.
She gave me a big heartfelt smile. "You're very welcome, y/n." She meant it too, I could tell.
"Dinner is ready in an hour." She spoke before closing the door behind her.I got dressed for the occasion and put my new earrings from Camilo on.
Maybe I was getting a bit too excited about such a small thing, but I couldn't stop my stomach from getting butterflies at the thought. then I realized, I was smiling at my reflection for the first time in a year, my cat-like eyes, turning upwards. I stared at myself for a bit, enjoying the silence.
Whatever this feeling is called, I liked it a lot.
