x. HALLWAYS GAMBLE
Lulu's phone hadn't stopped ringing ever since the news of her nomination had come out. She had received hundreds of texts, had been tagged in numerous instagram's posts, had been solicited for interviews and magazines' covers. It had been a hectic night for her and she was eventually forced to turn off her phone entirely to be able to sleep for a few hours.
When she got out of the bathroom to get breakfast with her sister before school, it all still felt like she was experiencing a different life in another universe. Because her life here didn't match at all with all the love and praise she was receiving from the world.
Her life hadn't changed and she couldn't process how she had gone from struggling to book a part once a year to now being nominated in the most prestigious ceremony in the country —and even the world. As if it was just pure luck and that it would slowly fade away. That she would fade away and become a distant memory in this industry.
She sat down in front of her sister, who slid a cup of coffee in her direction, "Hey, good night sleep?"
"Yeah, you?" Lulu asked back.
Zahia shrugged, lazily eating her cereal, "Like... three hours."
"Your insomnia's back?"
"I don't know... maybe."
And Zahia did look like she had barely gotten any sleep. She had dark circles under her eyes and was slouched over the kitchen table, barely strong enough to lift her spoon and bring it to her mouth.
Zahia noticed the concern on her sister's face and gave her a smile, "I'm fine."
"Maybe you should ask for some meds," Lulu advised, "To your therapist."
Zahia firmly shook her head, "No. I hate that shit, it makes me all lazy, no, no."
Lulu was about to talk that Zahia interrupted her by lifting an envelope, "We got a letter from the cops."
Lulu opened her eyes wide, reaching for it, "What does it say?"
"A social worker's coming over in a week," Zahia explained, "Her name's Mary."
Lulu read the letter and pinned it on the fridge, suddenly feeling like she couldn't eat anymore. She nervously sipped her coffee, "How're you feeling?"
"I still feel like it wasn't a good idea," Zahia confessed, "But, hey, we don't have the choice anymore."
Lulu looked down, feeling guilty, "I'm sorry... really, I'll fucking riot—"
Zahia chuckled, "It's okay. I probably would've done the same thing."
"Yeah..." Lulu sighed, "Okay, let's go or we're gonna be late."
... ... ...
Lulu couldn't get her mind off of the letter she had read earlier this morning. She was terrified at the idea of someone taking her sister away. And, if it ever happened, she couldn't shake off the idea of having to follow her to New York.
