Dr. Tsing placed yet another incision on the blonde girl's hip, making her cringe in terror.
"Please, stop," Monty begged. "She's too weak." He was ignored. The doctor lifted the drill yet again.
"Don't. Not again," Harper whimpered. She was hypersensitive to the sound of Maggie's practically dying breaths. She didn't wanna end up the same way.
"You're killing us," Pavil spat. He, too, had been drilled into, but only once, just like Monty. For some reason, they preferred the women. "Leave us alone."
"No. No!" Monty and Pavil both began to beat on their cage doors, Maggie not even stirring. He breathing was raspy.
Just as Tsing was about to start drilling, the door flew open and President Wallace walked in, his face thunderous. Tsing blanched.
"Mr. President," she greeted, her voice trembling.
"Put that down," he commanded. "Get away from that girl."
"Jasper!" Monty called.
"Monty!" the boy replied, running over to his friend's cage.
"Jasper, Maggie. Check on Maggie," the Asian boy told him frantically.
"Release them," Wallace commanded, the doctor's aid doing so. He unlocked all cages, starting with Monty's, then Pavil's, then Maggie's.
Pavil was out of his cage and gently pulling Maggie out of hers before the lock was even thrown away. He put his ear to her chest, listening to it rattle. It wasn't healthy but she was alive. Jasper had helped Monty out of his cage and was now looking down at Maggie with tears in his eyes.
"Holy shit." His voice cracked. Pavil lifted Maggie up bridal style, his legs stumbling slightly with fatigue and not much use. But he still held her strong enough.
"The ground is out birthright," Tsing defended. "You can't keep us from that."
"Watch me," Wallace challenged. "Lock her up." He turned his address to the people. Maggie opened her eyes in slits. Pavil's body heat had woken her up. She didn't have the energy to blush at the skin to skin contact. "Go back to the dorm and tell your friends to pack their things. You're going home."
