Donna's face looks absolutely mortified from behind her dad, her expression frozen as she stares into my soul.
W h a t t h e. h e l l ?
She mouths at me petrified.
I just close my eyes and patiently wait for my execution.
They are now seconds away from me.
"What" The looming shadow of a man thundered this one word very softly yet so brittle as if the name coughed out felt the like hot glass melting in his mouth . Like a cactus had pricked his heels, like a tiny speckle of sunlight had burned the tips of his fingers. Hot on the tongue, dripping with dangers and warnings.
Suddenly the weight i had originally felt slowly started to slide off my back and shoulders. I just realized. The man I'm looking at isn't Mr Kirencho. It's a father who i wish to impress.
I can almost feel my face again. Why am i so nervous to tell this man what i feel?
Stripped back.. this is simply a Man who wants the best interests for his daughter, which is what i want too. As i slowly look up to stare at him, i can sense the vagueness of his heart.
I am unreadable, and this fact frustrates him.
He feels overstimulated with both the entourage behind him and the colorful madness of my cousin. He is a powerhouse at understanding how to control people inside a court or a meeting room. An enclosed environment of vehicles and devices that submit to his every command.
This is not an enclosed environment. This is not a group of middle aged white clients. This is in the middle of a driveway, surrounded by three teenagers and a strange woman!, i can explain things now and then-
"You should be grateful i don't kill you here right now."
I can feel my stomach drop with a thud.
Mr Kirencho bends down to meet my eyes, face to face.
"What game are you playing at b o y."
And suddenly, all logic thrown out the window in those few seconds came back to haunt my smugness.
I forgot who this man was.
He was the type of man that women over the hills and mountains would shake into their children's psyche and mutter spells of devil coins and the men who housed their spirits. That they "sold their soul to the demons" and can never be "redeemed."
This beast of a man had somehow squished both the setting sun and the welcoming skies of the world into the palms of his hands and bent their necks into night. Like reverse glow-sticks that snapped the day into a cool sweet wisp of blank darkness that binds you.
That makes the hairs on your body jump up.
Shit. I haven't said anything.
"the worst thing you can give them is your energy, don't look angry don't look terrified like you do right now."
Jonah's words rung through my ears.
She's right.
I smiled knowingly, walking closer to Maya's father with a larger grin.
"Hello Sir, My name is Lev Chow Zheng, Heir to the Zheng Foundation, and the boyfriend of Maya Kirencho."
