It was now the 24th March and it was Mother's day. I had collected the kids from school to take them to see Elena. They had a bag full of presents for her especially. I knew today was going to be hard for them for definite. Gracie carried Chrissy while Sam followed her, which left me carrying all their bags. We arrived to her room and I put the bags down as they all kissed her cheek and gave her a hug carefully. "It's Mother's day today mummy! We've brought you goodies!" Chrissy shouted very loudly out of excitement. I expected the nurses to tell her to quiet down, but they didn't out of respect and sympathy. Chrissy then ran to her bag first and grabbed her things. She skipped back to Elena excitedly. "This is a daffodil, I made it from paper, but I don't like yellow so I coloured it in pink." She said. I chuckled, I knew that Elena would laugh too, which killed me inside that she was unable to. "I wrote a card too. I drew you in a land of haribos cos you like them. I put inside, to mummy, happy mother's day, I miss you lots like jellytots, love and cuddles from Chrissy. I hope you like it." Chrissy smiled. Gracie helped her put it on the shelf and lifted her up so Chrissy could kiss her nose.

Sam then grabbed his Spiderman rucksack and ran over to her. "Mummy, I drew a picture on sugar paper today and I got a sticker for colouring in the lines of the pictures we were given. I made you a YELLOW daffodil card too. The picture is of me and you in a superhero costume. Yours is pink and purple and mine is blue and green. I'm not wearing a skirt like you though cos skirts are for girls. You're supermum and I'm bounceboy, I have trampoline like powers. Your powers are love and to give the best cuddles. I coloured in rabbits and flowers to put round it. My card says ummm... dear mummy, I love love LOVE you. I miss you! You're the best mummy in the world. Love Sam, with loads of kisses cos you love loads of kisses even though they're girly." He told her. He held her hand. I beamed.

Gracie firstly put the purple and white flowers in a vase on her bedside table before grabbing her bag. Firstly she took out a collage of loads of photos of them together at Christmas pulling various faces in front of the tree. "Here's somes photos of us at Christmas which always makes you laugh. And you always love taking selfies with me." She informed her. She then held her hand and brought out her card. The card had a beautifully drawn picture of her and Elena smiling, she was very good at art. "I drew us on your card. I've written dear mum, you truly are an inspiration to me. You are the best mother that I could have asked for and I am grateful for all you have done for me. I have tried to keep strong through this, because you've taught me to never let fear win, but lately, especially today it's been harder to do that. I miss you so much it hurts. I keep having nightmares and I just needed you there to sing me or to plait my hair. I don't know how long I can live without you speaking to me. You are the kindest, funniest, craziest and prettiest mother that we could all have and we are blessed to be so lucky. I love you mum, please wake soon, Gracie." Gracie read through the sad tears that were brimming on the surface of her eyes. She kissed her forehead and smiled at me before running into my arms in floods of tears. I took her outside while Sam and Chrissy told Elena about their day.

"I'm so sorry." She sobbed. I held her in my arms and shook my head. I placed a light kiss on the crown of her head. "Don't apologise sweetheart. It's perfectly normal to be upset today." I reassured her. "It's just hard not having her react to her gifts. Mother's day was one of her absolute favourite days of the year. I just want her to be able to hold me, even if it's just for a second. She's my world Dad, I feel broken without her truly being here. What if she never wakes up? How am I supposed to live my life without her?" She admitted, tears streaming down her face. I brushed a loose strand of her hair from her face. "Your mother is a fighter. We need to stay positive. Her love and memories will keep you strong, as they do with me. She'd be so proud of you princess. You're being such a good role model for Sam and Chrissy. She will wake. I just know she will. I'm always here if it gets too much at night with the nightmares, you know that. I love you Gracie." I stated honestly. She hugged me tightly and wiped her eyes. "I love you too Dad. You're my rock." She answered. I kissed her forehead before leading her back into the room.
