"Is it good?" Lucas's step mother asked me while we were eating.
Nakaupo sa upuan sa gitna yung dad niya, sa kabilang side ng table ay yung step mom niya at si Lewis. Kami naman ni Lucas ay kaharap nila Lewis. Sa gilid ni Nathan yung dad niya, so, bale kami ni Lewis ang nasa dulo ng table.
"Yes, I love it." I smiled, referring to the pasta.
It's good that I finally loosen up, their family was very welcoming just like Lucas's mother's side.
The four of us turned our gaze at Lucas's dad when he cleared his throat.
"You're Natasha, right? Lucas's girlfriend since senior year?" he questioned.
Nagtaka ang bigla dahil sabi niya 'since'. Didn't we break up?
"Yes, sir." I answered, feeling nervous. It was like all the nervousness I was feeling a while ago came back.
He chuckled for a second, "Drop the 'sir', you can call me dad or uncle since you and my son are getting married."
"What?" gulat na sabi ko.
Getting married? Saan galing yon?
"Dad, we just got back together. We haven't really talked about that." Lucas rescued.
"Oh, my bad. Apologies." he said, giving me an apologetic smile.
Narinig kong natawa si Lewis at nginisian ako.
What does that mean?
"Did he tell you that he topped the Physician's Licensure Exam?" pagbabago ng topic ng daddy niya.
Napatingin agad ako kay Lucas na pinanlakihan bigla ng mata ang dad niya at nawal rin iyon nang makita niyang nakatingin ako sa kanya.
He topped the boards? Bakit hindi ko nabalitaan yon? Bakit walang lumabas sa bibig ni Xyrus? Sa daldal niyang yon hindi niya nasabi?
"It's nothing," sabi agad niya agad sa akin bago pa 'ko makasagot.
Anong nothing doon!? He topped the fucking boards! How is that nothing? Doesn't he feel proud?
Hanggang sa matapos kaming kumain ay hindi na niya winelcome ang topic na 'yon. Me and his family talked about my current experience as a resident. Okay naman ako sa trabaho ko, kahit nakakastress minsan, but I chose this field— at the end of the day alam ko naman talaga sa sarili ko na masaya ako sa ginagawa ko.
His dad was a doctor too, a neurosurgeon. Siguro nagging rason rin yon kung bakit naghiwalay sila ni tita Gia— biological mom ni Lucas, mama ni Danielle. The fact that they own a hospital here made me really understand the situation... and maybe it was part of the reason why Lucas left the Philippines.
