"Is this all we have left?", Inej sighed dejected at the minuscule pile of money on the table.

She groaned in pain, clutching her side.

"Jesper, my bag"

Jesper gagged at the sight of the wound.

Mother of Saints", his face curled up.

"It's not healing on its own. I need to stitch it", Inej gasped.

"How long before you can travel?", questioned Kaz

"Not long. Where?"

"Ketterdam. Between our dwindling funds, lack of time and conflicting interests, it's time we cut our losses"

"I guess the Bastard misses the Barrel", whispered Jesper.

Jesper groaned at the sigh of Inej sewing up her own wound. Inej raised her eyebrows.

"You can watch a bullet tear through a man, but a needle's too much?"

"It... Yeah, well, you see, bullets are bam, in and out. That's... That's just..."

Jesper gagged again and shook himself to erase the picture from his mind.

"Where'd you learn to do that?"

"When I was at the Menagerie"

"Yeah, but why would you... Oh, that's dark", Jesper spoke wide eyed.

"Which is why I can't go back"

"If you told Kaz that story, I think he'd murder Heleen himself"

"Jesper, you're not hearing me. I can't go back"

Jesper cleared his throat.

"What?", questioned Inej.

"Well, I was... I was going to tell you to trust Kaz and that he'd never let you go back, but... I don't have the right to tell you what you should do with your shot at freedom"

"You make this a lot harder, you know"

"I know. I'd miss me, too. I'm fantastic", Jesper spoke, tears forming in his eyes at the thought of losing his sister.

"And plus I don't exactly want to go back now. Not when I have the biggest clue to my brother and it's walking around with a human sunbeam", Jesper sighed.

Inej laughed.

"She talked about him you know. When we were at the Palace she said she wanted to get him off her mind"

"What?", Jesper whispered. "And no one told me"

"Kaz said we shouldn't but you deserve to know", Inej smiled.

"Look, I can't go back and you don't want to go back so let's help each other", Inej spoke softly.

"Always", Jesper smiled.

"Mal, when we find the Stag, I need to be the one to kill it", Alina spoke, shivering.

"You're a terrible shot. They made you a cartographer for a reason", Mal replied.

"Of course. I'll line it up for you, you take the shot", he spoke again.

"And I can easily direct it in the right direction", Ezra smiled.

"It's just... Do you really wear its bones?", Mal spoke.

Ada shuddered at the thought of her sister being melded with the animal. It would bring her power but who knew when it would get too much?
