They're in Colorado after learning about the death of somebody in their dad's journal. They inspected the guy's house before going to the post office and finding a letter addressed to somebody with John's initials there.
Now, Sam and Dean sit in the Impala with the girls in the backseat, Libby asleep while Ophelia stands up, leaning between the brothers, her head resting on Dean's shouler.
"J.W. You think? John Winchester?" Sam asks.
"I don't know. Should we open it?" Dean asks.
There's a knock on Dean's window making all three jump as Ophelia screams, waking Libby up. Dean raises his fist, but relaxes seeing his dad outside.
"It's okay, baby. We're okay." Sam comforts his daughter who starts to cry, but stops after being reassured that they're fine, Sam holding her hand and Ophelia stroking her hair helping to calm her down.
"Sorry, Libs." Ophelia mutters, knowing it was her scream that woke her up.
John gets in the backseat next to Ophelia making the young girl scoot closer to her cousin.
"Dad, what are you doing here? Are you all right?" Sam asks.
"Yeah, I'm okay. I read the news about Daniel, I got here as fast as I could. I saw you two at his place." John says.
"Why didn't you come in, dad?" Sam asks.
"You know why. Because I had to make sure you weren't followed by anyone... or anything. Nice job of covering your tracks by the way." John comments.
"Yeah, well, we learned from the best." Dean says.
"Wait, you came all the way out here for this Elkins guy?" Sam asks.
"Yeah. He was... he was a good man. He taught me a hell of a lot about hunting." John says.
"Well, you never mentioned him to us." Sam says.
"We had a... we had kind of a falling out. I hadn't seen him in years. I should look at that." John says, holding his hand out for the envelope and Dean gives it to him. He opens it, unfolding the letter. ""If you're reading this, I'm already dead." That son of a bitch."
"What is it?" Dean asks.
"He had it the whole time." John says.
"Dad, what?" Sam asks.
"When you searched the place, did you... did you see a gun? An antique, a colt revolver, did you see it?" John asks.
"Uh, there was an old case, but it was empty." Dean says.
"They have it." John says.
"You mean whatever killed Elkins?" Dean asks.
"We gotta pick up the trail." John says, getting out of the car.
"Wait. You want us to come with you?" Sam asks.
"If Elkins was telling the truth, we gotta find this gun." John says.
"The gun? Why?" Sam asks.
"Because it's important, that's why." John says.
"Dad, we don't even know what these things are yet." Sam says.
"They were what Daniel Elkins killed best. Vampires." John states.
"Vampires? I thought there was no such thing." Dean says.
"You never even mentioned them, dad." Sam says.
"I thought they were extinct. I thought Elkins and others had wiped them out. I was wrong." John says.
