Chapter 15

Ross' POV

I'm still on my way home and it's been an hour. I'm driving on the highway right now. All chilled. Of course I don't go over the speed limit. I'm following the rules. I'm a good driver. Well, the rest of my family always said I'm the worst driver in the history of driving, but I don't think I'm that bad. If I really was that bad, I must have gotten better till now.

My left hand is on the steering wheel and my right hand is on the radio station. Looking for a good channel. Finally I found one, it's playing R5's "Smile".

Ross: ♪Smile. (I wanna make you smile yeah oh oh). I wanna see you smile (oh yeah). I wanna see you smile. It's the things you do. I wanna make you smile. ♪

I just love this song, but sadly it's already over. For only 5 seconds I take my eyes off the road to look for a new channel, suddenly a black car drives with a speed limit of at least 120 into my direction. For some seconds I'm frozen and I don't know what to do. I can't move. Then in the last second I turn the steering wheel straight to the right, my car is following the direction and I crash into the tunnel wall.

My head crashes onto the glass, my whole body is exposed to a massive pressure wave. The other car rams into the side of my car and that's when everything is black.

Rydel's POV

Where's Ross? He was supposed to be here 20 minutes ago. Now we all start worrying, especially Ruby.

Ruby: What if something really bad happened?

Nathan: Ruby, sweetie. Relax, I'm pretty sure your dad is fine.

Ruby: How do you know that?

Nathan embraces Ruby into a tight hug, while she snuggles her head into his chest. They're so cute.

Rocky: Why don't we watch some TV to distract us?

Rocky stands up and gets the remote. He switches through the channels, until one show makes me stop him.

Rydel: Rocky, go back to Channel 21! The news are on!

Ryland: Why are the news on now? They never come to this time.

Stormie: Then probably something bad happened. Or some special news. Just listen kids.

News reader: This is a special edition of the news on Channel 21. Around 30 minutes ago another terrible accident happened because of a drunk ghost rider. He was driving on the wrong side of the high way, not just endangering himself, but also the other drivers on the high way. Our reporter Jason Smith is now at the scene of the accident. Jason, what can you tell us?

The screen changes and now a man in the mid-twenties is shown, the high way in the background with police, ambulances, barriers and lots of noise. This Jason guy starts talking.

Jason: Well Andrew, the scenery here isn't the greatest, as you may already have noticed. The drunk ghost rider was already arrested and brought to the police station. While he was driving on the wrong side he brought a driver on the opposite of him to crash into the wall, while the stolen car of the ghost rider also hit the side of the red Toyota Yaris. It caused not just huge damage on the car, but also massive damage to the innocent driver.

We all listen very closely, while the camera spins around the scenery towards the crashed red car.

Ruby: Why are we watching this? It makes me think that dad was in the car because we also have a red car.

Rebecca: Don't worry sweetheart. I'm pretty sure it wasn't dad. We just want to know who the victim was.

Ratliff holds a hand towards us.

Ratliff: Shhh! He continues!

Jason: We don't know who the victim in the other car is just yet because they're still trying to get him or her out of the remains of the car.

In the background the noises get louder. The news reader comes into one half of the screen.

Andrew: What happened Jason?

Jason: Well, apparently the ambulance finally got the person out of the car, but he doesn't look good. They're trying to resuscitate him, but it's not working.

In the background you can see the ambulance, as they put the man on a gurney into the ambulance coach, blood is everywhere on his body: face, hair, torso, arms, legs. He has lots of cannulas in his arm and an oxygen mask over mouth and nose. I can also see, that the hair of the victim is shining blond golden. I really hope this is not my little baby brother. Please dear god. Don't let it be Ross.

The screen is again full onto the news reader. He has one hand on his ear, probably receiving new information from the scenery.

Andrew: Thank you Jason. I just received further information about the victim. From the ambulance we know that the victim is former actor and lead singer of R5 Ross Lynch. Apparently he was on his way home, when this happened. He's brought immediately to the next hospital because he's in a very critical situation. The doctors don't know if he'll make it. That was is from out special edition of the news on Channel 21. The next time we'll be sending the news again to the regular time. I'm Andrew Jackson and see you next time on the news on Channel 21. Good night.

The closing melody is playing, shortly after that the channel changes to commercials. Rocky pushes the off button on the remote and the TV turns black.

Silent.

No one says anything. Then Ruby stands up and rushes up into her room, her hand over her mouth to quiet down the sobs. Nathan wants to run after her, but Rebecca stops him.

Rebecca: It's okay. I'll go.

Rebecca eyes are watery while she goes upstairs and now we all have tears streaming down our cheeks.

Nathan: I'm so sorry guys that this happened to you. I know Ross is a great brother and father. I'm really really sorry.

Stormie: *between sobs* Thank you Nathan. You're a good kid. We're glad you came into Ruby's life.

Ryland: *between sobs* Can we go into the hospital? Like ... now? Please?

Ratliff: Yes please? *tears streaming down his cheeks*

Rydel: *between sobs* But ... but what about Rebecca and Ruby?

Riker: *with broken voice* I'll come later with them when they talked. You guys can already go.

Stormie. Are you sure Riker?

Riker: *sobs* Yeah, go. We'll be there.

Rocky: *between sobs* Alright bro, but please be careful okay? Drive very carefully! Promise?

Riker: ... Promise.

We all have a group hug together, until we go towards the door.

Rydel: Nathan? Do you want to come or would you rather go home?

Nathan: I'm going with Riker then. I have to support my girlfriend.

Mark. Alright see you then kids. We love you.

Riker: *sobs* Love you too.

We close the door behind us and go towards our van. We get in and dad drives as carefully as possible, till be get to the hospital in which they brought Ross.
