Chapter 19

Ryland's POV

We've been walking for 4 minutes till Nancy stops in front of a door. Ross' room. Behind this door is one of my big brothers.

Nancy: Please only two at the time. And please don't stay too long.

Mark: Thank you.

Nancy nods at us, then she leaves. Now we just have to figure out who will go in first. We all look at each other.

Ryland: Okay ... who goes first?

Rebecca: Mark, Stormie. I think you should go first.

Stormie: But you're his girlfriend.

Rebecca: It's okay. I'll go later with Ruby. You're his parents. Family comes first.

Mark. Alright.

Dad takes mom's hand. He slowly reaches out for the door handle. Then they disappear into the room. You can already hear mom's sobs after 30 seconds. I'm pretty sure Ross doesn't look good. After around 5-8 minutes they come back, both with dried tear stains on their faces.

Riker: Who should go next? I mean, we're an uneven number of people.

Ryland: I'll go next. See you then.

I go towards the door and open it slowly. Then I go inside.

Rebecca's POV

After 5 minutes Ryland comes back, also with tear stains on his cheeks. After him Riker and Rocky, then Rydel and Ratliff. Nathan doesn't want to see Ross because he's not so close to him like we are. Rydel comes out again while bawling her eyes out. Ratliff is holding her and helps her onto one chair. The whole family was already inside. Now it's our turn. I go over to my depressed daughter, who has smeared make-up all over her face. I reach my hand out for her to hold it.

Rebecca. Are you ready to do this?

Ruby: *nods*

Ruby takes my hand and we slowly go inside Ross' room. As soon as we enter Ruby and I gasp. There he is. My boyfriend. Ruby's father. We slowly go towards the hospital bed. Ross is laying emotionless there. No movement at all. It looks like his whole body is wrapped up, his face has scratches and bruises, he has thousands of cannulas in his arms and an oxygen mask over nose and mouth to help him breath. The heart monitor next to his bed shows a green line which goes slowly up and down and which is making silent noises, a sign that there is at least still some life inside of him. Sobs and tears escape from the both of us, while we take two chairs and sit next to Ross. Ruby takes her father's hand into hers and her tears drop into the sheets of the bed.

Ruby: I love you dad. Please come back. I can't live without you. And you promised me that you will never leave me.

Of course Ross doesn't react which break mine and Ruby's heart even more.

Ruby: Please dad. Your family needs you, mom needs you, I need you.

Still no response. Ruby turns towards me and wraps her arms around my waist. I wrap my arms around her shoulders and hold her close. She suddenly looks at me with sad eyes.

Ruby: Do you want to be alone with him?

Rebecca: *with broken voice* ... If you don't mind.

Ruby: Of course not. I know how much you love him.

We release from out hug; Ruby goes over to Ross and kisses his forehead before she goes to the door. Before she leaves she turns around one more time. She forms a heart with her index fingers and whispers.

Ruby: I love you dad. Please never forget that.

Then she's gone.

I'm alone now with Ross. I take his hand into mine and start stroking the back of his hand with my thumb. My tears fall onto his hand and roll down, till they disappear into the white sheets. I push his blond messy hair out of his face.

Rebecca: Oh Ross. Please wake up. What am I going to do if you don't wake up? I can't live without you. You're my everything. My world. Now I know what it felt like, when I left you and I'm so sorry, but for the last 13 years my life has been perfect because I had you in my life again. And I hope I don't have to throw that away now because I hope that you will wake up from your sleep and we can be a happy family again, but please. If you're going to leave me and won't wake up, then this is not your fault. I just hope, you won't forget me and Ruby when you're living in heaven. And I hope you will always love us just like I'm always going to love you.

I kiss his forehead lightly and look at him with teary eyes.

10 MINUTES LATER

I'm still looking at Ross, while I'm holding his ice cold, dead hand. No other sound is in the room except for the heart monitor. The line goes up and down in a constant rhythm, till

... ... ...

A straight line appears on the screen and a non-stop tone. Beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeepppppppp.

...

It's over.

...

He's gone.

...

Forever.

...
