"I wish we could go home," You whispered after leaning your head on Cheong-san's shoulder. He leaned his head in your direction, his head now laying on top of yours.

"We will go home. We just have to wait a little more. I promise we'll go home."

"Do you pinky promise?" Although this wasn't the time for jokes, you couldn't help but try to lighten up your friend's mood.

Cheong-san chuckled at your request but brought out his pinky finger, nonetheless, wrapping it around yours. "Pinky promise."

"When we go home together, the first thing we should do is eat your mom's delicious fried chicken as soon as we get out of here. Okay?"

Cheong-san lifted his head and turned to look down at you, "Is that the only reason you became my friend? To eat fried chicken for free? I was joking when I said that, you know?"

"Well. Chicken wasn't the only reason, but partially, yes."

"Well, what was the other reason?"

You lifted your head from his shoulder, turning to look into his eyes.

For a moment, you considered telling him why you had approached him on that bright and sunny summer day.

The day you approached him for the first time, to ask him out. You considered telling him how you almost regretted walking up to him after tripping on a water bottle that was left near the bleachers of the soccer field. After promptly falling on your face in front of him, you stood up and had no choice but to continue walking in his direction.

Nonetheless, you still approached him, letting him know that you had eaten at his mom's restaurant and wanted to ask him if they needed a worker. That was the best lie you could come up with after losing all your confidence with that fall.

But Cheong-san believed the only reason you had asked was for the possibility of getting free chicken. Considering you seemed nice enough and had complimented his mom's food, he told you that if you wanted free chicken from his mom's place the only way to get it was by becoming his friend. So you agreed, and it only took you one step closer to him. The problem was, you never took the next step after that.

"I'll tell you once we get out of here."

Yet here you were, sitting in a bed at the quarantine zone, with a nurse tending to your wounds. You didn't want to be here. You wanted to be by his side, you wanted to travel back in time and lay your head on his shoulder again. You wanted to tell him all about how you loved him.

You regretted not telling him in that instant. And here you were, long after Cheong-san had broken his promise, crying all your tears out as you remembered your last moments together.

"I know I'm breaking my promise, but you have to go home." You pulled him closer, shaking your head as tears streamed down your face.

"You can't break our promise. Please don't break our promise."

He held you tighter for an instant, planting a kiss on the crown of your head before letting go. "Let's have a lot of fried chicken together in our next life, Sun-hee."
