Birthday

Pov y/n

I lay in bed, cuddling into a pillow with a t-shirt of my girlfriend as pillow-case. She's been on a mission the last two weeks and I miss her like crazy.
It's not that it's unusual for her to be on a mission and some take longer but right now I really wish she was here. Tomorrow is my birthday and even though I don't really celebrate it, I would have loved to spend the day with her, just enjoying each other's company but sadly that's not possible.

Her current mission takes longer than planed in the beginning.
It was supposed to last 10 days but there were complications and it's unsure how long it will take but at least another week, that's for sure.
Nat told me all of that two days ago when we were on a call.
Due to the work it's not possible for us to call every day and even chatting is complicated.
Usually she has more free time on missions but not on this one. Maybe that's why I miss her even more.

I cuddle the pillow closer that smells like her since I put her t-shirt on it.
I've always done that when she was away for longer than three days because I got so used to her smell and her body next to mine while falling asleep.
We are together a little over three years now and Nat tries to not get assigned for missions that take longer than two days. It works a lot of times but there were always missions she still had to go on that took longer. Just like now.
With the thought of her laying next to me and cuddling me, I fall asleep.

The next morning the sun shines into my room and I wake up slowly and it takes me a few seconds to remember which day it is: it's my birthday.
I feel excitement bubble up in me and get up to get ready for the day.
For some reason I always liked my birthday, not because of the gifts or attention but just because I am happy to live.
Just as I'm about to head down to the kitchen, my phone rings and I take the call from my mother. She wishes me a happy birthday and we talk a little bit while I walk into the kitchen of the compound.

As I enter, Yelena jumps up, runs to me and tackles me into a big hug, ignoring that I'm on the phone.
I laugh, say goodbye to my mother and hug Yelena back.
Ever since we meet, we were inseparable and had a lot of fun together, which comes in handy since I'm dating her sister.
Yelena and I both love to prank the other Avengers and tend to get in quite some trouble sometimes but it's always worth it.
She is my best friend, if we don't count Nat, obviously.

"Happy birthday, little dork!" She says in excitement and I playfully role my eyes at her.
"I'm not that small!" I defend myself and she lets go of me and we grin at each other.
"Still smaller than me and that's enough." She teases and we laugh as she guides me to the kitchen isle.
"Since it's your birthday, I made some pancakes."
She points to the plate with a stack of pancakes on them.
I smile and thank her as I sit down on a barstool and grab an empty plate.
She's so sweet and I really appreciate her doing it for me because she knows that it's a birthday tradition of Nat and me to make the other one pancakes as birthday breakfast.

Yelena sits down next to me and grabs an empty plate too and we both take a pancake and pour some sirup on them.
I'm surprised by how good they taste, I didn't know Yelena could cook this good.
They remind me of the ones Nat always made for me and I smile, eating my pancakes.

After we finish eating them and put our plates into the sink, Yelena tells me to wait for her because she has to get my present. On her command I close my eyes and wait for her to return, excited to see what she got me.
As a pair of hands lays above my eyes, I lift my hand to feel who's fingers it could be.
I know it's not a stranger because the compound is safer than the white house and no one could break in.

"Yelena?" I ask, a little confused at why she would place her hands above my already closed eyes.
"Yes?" I hear her voice from in front of me. But if it's not her hands, who's are they?
I slowly turn around and open my eyes, letting out a loud squeal as I see my favorite redhead, chuckling at me.
I jump into her arms and hug her tightly, wrapping my legs around her waist and burying my face in her neck.

With one arm she holds me up, with the other she rubs my back and spins us around a little.
I pull my head back a little to look into her beautiful green eyes, before my eyes dart down to her lips and I lean in, meeting her lips half way.
The kiss is soft and lovingly and I sigh a little, realizing how much I missed this.
We let go of each other when we need air and she carefully puts me down, her hands still on my sides as I put mine around her neck.
"I thought you were on a mission."
She smiles and tugs a strain of hair behind my ear.
"I was but I convinced them that they don't need me for the last few days because I wanted to spend your birthday with you."
Her hand cups my cheek and I lean into her touch a little and smile at her.

"If you two are done with this heartwarming reunion, I would like to give y/n her present now." Yelena says and smirks cheekily at us as we look at her.
I raise an eyebrow in surprise.
"This wasn't your present?"
"No, I won't give you my sister as a birthday gift. Before she's yours forever, you first have to ask permission to marry her." She states grinning and shrugs her shoulders.
"Of course, I will." I agree and see Nat smiling in the corner of my eye.
Yelena nods and hands me a wrapped box that I didn't notice before.
I take it and open it.
A wide grin grows on my face at the friendship-adventure book she got me.

There are a bunch of pages, each with covered ideas for trips or activities to do together and place for a picture underneath.
"It's amazing, thank you, Lena." I hand the book to Nat to hug my best friend who smiles happily.
"I'm looking forward to go on many adventures with you." She says and I return her smile.
"Don't steal her from me." Nat chips in with a playful scold and Yelena pulls me into her side, sticking out her tongue to her sister.

"You know, I missed you a lot the past two weeks." I say to Nat, looking up at her.
We're currently on the roof of the compound. It's night and we put down a blanket to sit on.
My head rests in her lap and she plays with my hair as I watch the stars in the sky.
"I missed you too, moya lyubov (my love)."
I hum as her fingertips brush over my hairline and she leans down to give me a gentle kiss.
She carefully lifts up my head as she lays next to me and pulls me into her.
I rest my head on her chest and wrap one arm around her waist, holding her close.

"Those pancakes this morning, I made them." She tells me as we both watch the beautiful sky.
I chuckle slightly. "That's almost what I thought after I saw you. I was wondering how Yelena could have made them this good, she usually burns most of the food. Well, except her macaroni and cheese."
Nat laughs a little and nods. "True. I just wanted to surprise you after breakfast but also didn't want to let our tradition slip, so I told Yelena to say she made them."

"Thank you. For the pancakes, for my present, for coming home earlier and especially for the great day together, I really enjoyed it."
I beam up at her and she gives me a kiss on the forehead.
"I wouldn't want to miss your birthday. You are the most important person in my life and I wanted to make sure, your birthday would be good."
"It was the best." I smile and kiss her soft lips.
"I love you." She mumbles after breaking the kiss.
"I love you too."
