"Shhhh"

You were speechless. There he was, in your attic.

"How did yo-"

"Are you alone?" He asked.

"My family is at the market" you said shakily.

You're family had just left. It was Saturday. Every family would usually go the Niagara river market to gossip and sell goods. You wanted to get ahead of your chores, so you stayed home. You went upstairs to the attic to start spinning string, when you saw a sounded person sitting on a pile of blankets.

"Who are you?" You asked, fists up for protection.

"Matthew Williams" he replied calmly, his voice lower than a wisper.

"What are you doing in my house" you growled.

"Hiding. Listion, I can't go outside. They'll hang me" he said quickly.

You were confused. Hang me?. You then remembered a sign you saw on a pole outside. A proclamation. If they find any rebels, they will hang them.

You backed away quickly. A rebel was in your house. Someone who went against the government, fought against your country. They marched through the streets of Toronto, killing anyone who was in their way.

"Just help me..." He pleaded.

Your eyes widened. Why would you help him? You were too scared to say no.

"Just help me get to the States... I'll be free and won't bother you again." Matthew told you.

You just stared at him in shock, hands covering your mouth.

"You're scared. The things people say are lies. I didn't kill a soul. I just wanted to stand up for what was right."

He then started to tell you a story about his family. His father Arthur lost their farm because of the government. His brother Alfred had to work full time. He never sees his brother. His voice was quiet. He didn't look like someone who could cause trouble. You started to scoot closer to him. He didn't seam that bad. You felt bad for his poor family. You studied him. His hair was ragged, with hair sticking out. He wore a faded red flannel with black pants, which were ripped. His face looked gentile and kind. He had cuts all over, probably from trees. After hearing his story, you wanted to help. He told you about a boat that was hidden near the boarder. He needed someone to help him.

"I'll help you. Only because I need you of my property"

Time skip

You're parents had gone to bed, along with your siblings. They didn't look in the attic, so Matthew was safe up there. It was dark out, and you had gotten dressed in dark clothing. You walked upstairs and helped Matthew down the stairs. It looked like his ankle was twisted. You walked out of the house and started walking down the farm trail to the road. Once you got to the road, you crossed cautiously and hid into the forest.

"My family should be there already" he mumbled to himself.

"So they know how to cross?"

"Yeah. Our family friend Francis travels a lot. They should be able to get on a ferry and pass them off as family"

"How about you?"

"We were separated in the battle. Alfred retreated right away, so nobody saw his face. I was identified, so they know I was there"

Suddenly there was light. You both crouched down.

"I think I herd someone" the voice said.

"Its the farm next door. His name is Antonio. He's a foreigner, but he's very loyal" you explained.

You crawled away from the light. As soon as you saw the light fade, you stood up.

"Can you run?" You asked.

"I think so"

You pulled Matthew up and started running, holding his hand.

You got to a steep cliff, 20 feet down was the water. You could see the States from there. You looked over to Matthew, who was looking through a nearby bush. He pulled out a small row boat.

"Help me get this into the water"

You tied a rope to the top of the boat, and another on the back. Matthew got into the boat, and you pushed it closer to the edge.

"Well, I guess this is goodbye" he chucked.

"Yeah, good luck Matthew." You smiled.

"We made a good team huh?" He laughed.

"Don't get you're hopes up, we still need to get you into the water."

You smiled and kissed his cheek. He blushed and touched his cheek.

"I believe in you"

You sighed and pushed him off, still holding the two ropes. You lowered it down until you herd a little splash. You felt something untie the ropes. You pulled the ropes back and looked down. Matthew started rowing quietly. You watched him row until he got to the boarder.

He was safe

You smiled and waved to him. He looked over and waved back. He made it to the island and pushed the boat onto the shore. His eyes were shining, his hair blowing in the wind. He had a huge grin on his face.

His hope was restored again, because of you
