That night, I moved back into the room with him.
The next day, he was up bright and early. He was cleaned up and ready to go.
As someone who's desires has been satisfied for the night, so was I.
We were out searching for a particular stand user when a thought occured. I said, "You like being bitten, right?"
Jotaro sighed, "Yeah." He wouldn't look at me as he was reading through some papers in his hands.
"And it hurts, right?"
"...yeah."
I came to my conclusion, "So doesn't that mean you're a masochist?"
Slowly, he pulled the papers down and looked over at me. He looked like he was having an internal war over if this was true or not. He said quietly, "Let's talk about that later."
"Yeah, sorry," I said.
And we continued our task at hand.
Later that evening, he took his shower second. I was sitting at the table exhausted after a full day out. I was sipping on some tea to wind down.
Jotaro's cell phone began ringing.
I decided to check just in case it was any of the SPW workers. I picked up his phone and saw that it was not.
It was his ex-wife. I wondered if it was about his daughter. I sat his phone down and sighed.
When he got out of the shower, fully clothed, I said, "Hey, you got a phone call." I got up and grabbed the phone. I passed it to him.
He opened it and closed it. "It's nothing."
"It's your ex-wife," I said, feeling a bit bad.
"She's only going to nag me about coming back for Jolyne since she got herself into some trouble," he said. "I would go back for her... If I could." An exhausted exhale left his lips. Then he looked at me as if he said something he shouldn't have. "I'm sorry."
"No, it's important to talk about things like that," I reassured. "Especially if it was wearing you down."
Jotaro sat on his bed. Then he laid down. "What's the point when nothing is going to change."
I sat on my bed across from him. "What do you mean?"
He took a moment before answering. "I can't go to them. They would be in danger."
"Because of the stand users attacking other stand users, right?"
He nodded. "They already despise me, but I'm not coming back because of their safety. The last thing I need is for them to die because me."
I swallowed, "That's heavy."
He didn't respond.
The silence was tense.
"I'm going to sleep," he said as he got into his bed and laid down. He wrapped his blankets around his shoulders.
Despite being in a relationship, we still slept in separate beds. We were okay with having space at times.
I wasn't sure what to say about his situation. He already had his fair share of death. He didn't want anymore.
I decided to go to bed soon after him. I wanted to help him in every way I could, but I could only think of temporary things to distract him. I wished that I could understand the pain, so maybe I could help him. Maybe if I could see what he sees.
Suddenly, I was seeing what he saw. It was all in tunnel vision, but I knew I was in an unfamiliar place. Deep and husky breathing were in my ears. I could hear the thudding of a heartbeat going at lightening speed. Teeth were chattering.
