There was a deep rumble that vibrated through Spencer's throat as he sat in the passenger seat of his buddy's car early that Monday morning, and, after he pulled the door closed, he slumped back.
"Well, good morning to you too, Sunshine."
After fastening his seatbelt, Spencer glared over at his smiling comrade before rolling his eyes and crossing his arms over his chest.
"Geez, remind me not to mess with you before the sun comes up."
Spencer let out a huff, running his hand through his hair before flipping his hood on, crossing his arms once again as he shook his head.
"Dude, the second we're on the bus-- I'm goin' right back to sleep, alright? Don't wake me up."
"Oh, don't worry, bro. I won't be waking you up at all."
Spencer's eyebrows fused together in confusion and he glanced over at Brendon, tilting his head a little as he shifted in his seat, leaning against the center console.
"What do you mean? Why'd you say it all weird like that?"
Brendon glanced over at Spencer, who hadn't taken his suspicious glance off of him, before focusing back on the road, making a weird face while he switched lanes.
"Well... I'm actually sitting with Alex."
Spencer gave Brendon a look and when he looked over he let out a huff, shaking his head.
"Come on, dude. You know Al. If I don't sit with her, this entire week will be hell, and I don't wanna start the third World War just because I didn't sit with my girlfriend. Just sit with Frankie."
"Nah, she's probably sitting with her other bestie."
There was no hiding the sarcasm at the end of Spencer's sentence. Jasmine, Alex, and Frankie all called each other 'besties' like most girls at their school did, but at the end of the day, Spencer knew there wasn't another person who could tell him anything about Francesca from the way she took her tea-- because she hated coffee--- all the way to how many marshmallows she could eat without puking.
The two had been by each other's side since they were babies and had gone through everything together.
But something changed over the summer when they turned thirteen: it was suddenly like Frankie was this girl and Spencer had been spent the last few years after hopelessly falling for her.
That hope apparently wasn't lost when Spencer finally shot his shot a fears years later, and he couldn't believe that Frankie hadn't been weirded out when he asked to kiss her.
And after agreeing that anything more than hooking up was off the table when it came to their feelings, Spencer knew he was done for.
He knew he was in love with Frankie but he just couldn't tell her... not if it meant losing her friendship.
