“Fair, fair; fair fair. It seems your mental fortitude is manageable. You were able to shoot right into the bullseye of 200 metres, all ten times without missing a single shot. That's manageable for one who started learning yesterday,” said the black-gown Old Sage Muyu.
I gritted my teeth in anger.
‘Would you die if you give me a proper compliment?’
“Today, your objective is to aim and shoot at me. I'll be moving quite fast, so all you need to do is shoot faster than my movement. If you can accomplish a shot on any part of me within an hour, you'd be free to go home for the day, or if you choose to stay, you'll be given an hour of rest while I'd teach you a new archery trick. Deal? Deal.”
Sweat rolled down the side of my face, slowly. I didn't even know if I should laugh or cry.
“Haha... don't be afraid of injuring me, I'm indomitable!” she exclaimed laughing. With the way she acted, maybe she really was an old woman... ugh!
‘Who's afraid of injuring you? It's exactly what I want. I'm only afraid you'll injure me to death with your speed as I shoot endless arrows! I'll definitely be panting like a dog by the time I'm done.’
“Take this. It's a total of 100 arrows in this receptacle, so you know you've failed the test if the arrows are exhausted.”
My weak legs wobbled and couldn't take it any longer before my knees feel to the ground, making a ‘putong!’ sound.
“Hahaha, please go easy on me! Your time starts now!”
After saying those words, could you imagine this woman on high heels began jogging away, catwalk-like, telling herself she was running! I couldn't help but suppress my laughter as I watched her buttocks bouncing up and down like a contorted spatial rift.
“If this is a grand disguise you have on yourself, I'm sure it's the worst among all Divine realm experts...”* * *
Thinking about the interval, I got to understand that this Old Sage was trying to teach me to use multiple arrows, since in this case she'd be dodging and constantly changing position. I nodded slightly in apprehension as I watched her fleeing the open field. She was running like a rich man's child who was asked to partake in a race for the first time... it was so annoying! I felt I could shoot her over a thousand arrows in those lopsided butts of hers!
“She's already thirty metres away, I better start shooting.”
Standing on same spot, I quickly engaged my Eye of Insight. I'd be a fool to believe she was a weakling at running. This weirdo would simply give me an hour of rest? Nah-ah! I'm definitely not buying that lie.
For a start, I didn't start drawing out several arrows. I just drew one, as though as I was aiming at a 200-metre bullseye. It was even easier since it wasn't even up to a 100-metre yet.
‘Fuuuun!’
The arrow made a piercing sound as it swarm through the air and aimed for the “bullseye” — cough cough — in front of me. With the preciseness of my shot, I didn't even have to look. I simply turned around and whistled, waiting for the screaming sound. I was counting slowly on my fingers.
‘One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, ahh! Isn't it about time?’
I turned around swiftly, only to see that she'd just crossed the 100-metre border!
“Huhn, that isn't right.”
I saw the region I'd aimed, and my arrowhead pinned into the earth; a precise sign that I'd missed my shot!
“I'm going to watch how you did it this time.”
‘Fuuuun!’
The arrow flew quickly at my approximated “bullseye” again. This time, I watched it carefully with my Gift.
It was slowly approaching her right butt... I mean, the bullseye. Cough, cough. Anyways, concentrate.
Immediately it got there, my eyes shot out and almost dropped from its sockets! What the flying cow was this?!
When it approached her leg, all she did was stop moving abruptly (which is kind of impossible for someone who should have been running at full speed). She pushed her waist to the left, letting the arrow miss its shot and dive into the sand like the previous one. She turned her head around, pouted her head like a princess, and continued... running, was it?
I gritted my teeth in anger and began shooting madly at this crazy lady!
‘Fu-fu-fu-fu!’
Two arrows headed for her left side and her right. The remaining two I shot were just some random shots that could be of aid to the first two. I didn't have a multiple shooting technique, so that's all I could think of.
‘Eye of Insight.’
“Closer,” I whispered, and my eyes immediately zoomed for fifty metres more. I shook my head in dissatisfaction.
“Much closer.”
I finally got a 3-D view of her this time. She didn't stop moving like I thought she'd make the mistake and do. She simply dived to her right with “all her might”, rendering all four arrows from me useless.
“Humph!” I clenched my fists and shot two arrows at her, then two extra in case she flew to her right; but she had to jump to the left this time.
“Urgh!”
Sweat trickled down my head as I shot two at the target, and two on both sides of her. This time, she dived ahead of herself, lying flat and letting the arrows aimed at her to fly past. I was frustrated, but it was actually expected. Would it really be easy to make a sneak attack on Divine realm experts? You must be kidding! It was as if she had eyes everywhere.
She had already reached the 150-metre range.
‘No, no, no, I can't let her! My limit's 200!’
I quickly covered 100 metres in a second, the moment my right leg stumped on the floor.
Who was I kidding?
As I covered 100 metres, she too covered 100 metres, keeping our distance, even. I rolled my eyes and reined in my cultivation before I started running like an ordinary human. It was so exhausting to chase in an open field without a shade. The weather was supposed to be cold due to the season... however, here in this mad old lady's world, it's Africa-hot!
As I ran, I shot rapidly. Two left, two centre, two right, two forward again.
Unknowingly to me, I was already practicing one of the most complex forms of archery. It only felt easy to me because I'd been thinking it's only reasonable to close escape routes of my target, but in reality, this was what was taught in military schools. This was something I found out much later in life. For now, I had only one objective; shoot her ass!
