Sarah age: 12
Sarah has been enrolled in public school for two months now. It was going okay. She was really shy and had a hard time speaking up in class. Her grades were okay; mostly Bs and a couple of Cs. Sarah felt bad because she was worried that Kevin would be upset with her. She was trying her best but school was hard. Especially since she had no one to help her. Kevin was gone, her father was too busy, and she hasn't made any friends yet.
At school Sarah was eating her lunch in the library. She was too scared to enter the cafeteria. There were a lot of people in there and she wasn't sure where to sit. The library was a safe option; she doesn't have to worry about having nowhere to sit. When she entered the library, she saw a flyer on the bulletin board. The flyer was for an after-school cooking class. That piqued Sarahs interest big time.
So far, her father and her have lived mostly off of take out and microwave meals. Yes, her father can cook and he does occasionally do but he has been super busy with work and his 'coworkers'. Sarah has tried to cook herself but all attempts have not been successful. She saw the flyer said classes are twice a week and she needs to get a permission slip filled out. Sarah was super excited to do this class. She had no doubt her dad would sign the slip. She needed to get the permission slip from the librarian; which she did right away.
The next day she got to school a bit early to hand in her signed permission slip. Her dad didn't even read what it was for. All Sarah had to do was ask him to sign the paper and he did. He barley looked at before signing it and handing it back to her. Sarah handed the slip to the librarian who then told her that there will be a class that night. If she wishes so Sarah can join that class or the next one. Sarah was super excited to start so she will be going to that day's class.
School seemed to drag out that day. Sarah couldn't wait for it to be over with. She hopes she can learn to cook something and maybe make a friend. When school was finally over the girl made her way over to the room where the cooking class was being held. It seemed like Sarah was the last one to the class. She saw all but one table was taken. She wanted to walk in the class with her head held high but she couldn't. Sarah was to scared and shy. The girl walked super-fast to the table with her head down to her chest.
Once she was at her station the teacher took a quick roll call and welcomed the new students. Everyone seemed to have a partner but her. The teacher instructed everyone to put on the aprons provided. After that she started to teach them how to make a simple but classic treat Chocolate Chip cookies!
The teacher did a great job at explaining all the instructions. They were to make two batches of the cookie dough. The first batch will be the classic chocolate chip and the second the students can add anything they want to the dough. Within reason of course. So far, the first batch for Sarah seems to be going okay. When Sarah tasted the dough, she made a face like the dough was bad. She followed the directions exactly how the teacher said to so what went wrong.
She heard someone laughing and Sarah turned her head to see a girl next to her. "Hi. My names Emily. I had to stay behind to talk about an English paper so I was running late. Its nice to meet you! I am guessing the cookie dough isn't turning out so well?" Emily stuck her hand out to the girl. Sarah being nervous hesitantly shook Ashleys hand. "Nice to meet you. I'm Sarah." Sarah frowned and looked down at the bowl. "Yeah, I am not sure why though. I followed the teachers' instructions. I am certain of that. I think."
Emily grabbed a spoon and took some of the cookie dough. Once the dough hit her taste buds Emily immediately spit it out. She then grabbed her water bottle and took a sip. "I know what you did. You put salt instead of sugar." Emily said. Sarah felt really bad. How could she mix up the salt and sugar. Emily seeing the look on Sarahs face reassured her that it was no big deal. "Trust me this is no biggie. On my first class we were being taught how to make omelets. Lets just say I wasn't paying attention to what I grabbed and added some really hot peppers. The teachers and my mouths were on fire!"
Hearing that Sarah laughed a bit and so did Emily. "So now let's throw this batch away and start anew." Emily said. While they made the new batches the girls got to know each other. As the girls talked, they made a new batch of classic chocolate chip cookies and in the second batch, they added potato chips. The girls realized that they didn't have to much in common but they still got along.
"I really like you. You seem very nice and sweet. A bit shy but I hope as we become better friends that you will be less shy!" Emily said smiling as she took the first batch of cookies from the oven. "Friends?" Sarah asked. "Yes of course! Just because we don't have a lot in common doesn't mean we can't be friends. Plus, who knows maybe we can get each other into new things!" Sarah couldn't hardly hide her excitement. She had a friend!
Sarah started to jump around a bit. She was super exited! When she saw Emily staring at her she immediately stopped. She put her head down in embarrassment. "Sorry when I get really excited or happy, I like to jump or dance a bit. You are my first friend in a long time." Emily just nodded her head at what Sarah said. "Hey that's cool. Maybe tone it down when we are around other people? If its just us then go ahead and do that but when in class or public maybe keep it down a bit?" Emily said looking around the class. Glad no one saw Sarah jumping around.
"Oh of course! I will work on that!" Sarah really would work on her jumping and dancing. She didn't want to risk losing her first friend! So as the class came to an end Emily and Sarah exchanged emails. Sarah didn't have a cell phone. Emily said that when they go to the mall that Sarah will have to get one. It'll be easier to stay in touch. Sarah agreed. Super excited to have a friend!
