The next day was very tiring, classes had started and the day felt very long. Harry, Ron, and Hermione got their schedules during breakfast and set off to their first lesson; potions. Professor Slughorn was still teaching this class. But he was still shaken from the war. It was an easy class. They learned about some of the new ingredients and tools they would be using to make potions.
The rest of their classes weren’t as easy though. Professor McGonagall gave them homework in their first lesson. Professor Flitwick did too. Lunch couldn’t come soon enough. But luckily, after lunch the three of them had a free period.
Harry, Ron, and Hermione were standing in the corridor listening to Hermione constantly telling them
that they should be doing their homework. “Hermione, it’s only the first day. We’ll have plenty of time to do it,” Ron sighed.Hermione glared at them, “Ron, you do this every year and you eventually run out of time to finish your work. You’re going to get in trouble.”
Ron ignored her and leaned against the wall. “I love being a seventh year, or eighth year.”
Hermione shook her head in disbelief. Ron refused to go back to the common room and work so Hermione eventually gave up and stopped trying to convince them. But after a few minutes the fun had died. The Slytherins came up to Harry, Ron, and Hermione as they were talking. Draco Malfoy stopped right behind Harry. Pansy and Blaise were beside Draco as though they were his bodyguards. Harry turned around to see Malfoy only a few inches from him. Harry hastily took a step back.
“What do you want?” Harry asked, tersely.
Malfoy stood for a few moments glaring at Harry before he said, “You’re blocking.the corridor, Potter. Our class is this way.”
“Oh,” Harry muttered. He had expected something different. He had thought that Malfoy had come up to him to cause trouble.
Harry and Hermione began to move against the wall to let them pass but Ron stayed where he was. Hermione looked between the Slytherins and Ron with a frightened look on her face.
“Move out of the way, Weasley,” Malfoy said, glaring at Ron.
“We were here first. You can go some other way,” Ron said, crossing his arms. He was not moving and Harry could tell what was wrong.
“Ron, don’t be thick. Just move out of the way, Mate.” Harry said. Ron glanced at him but didn’t move or say anything.
Malfoy just stood watching Ron. He didn’t pull out his wand or do anything. He just watched him. Ron must have seen that Malfoy wasn’t going to react.
“We shouldn’t have to move for them,” Ron growled. But he turned on the spot to walk over to Hermione. “Death Eaters,” He mumbled under his breath as we walked away.
Malfoy was rooted to the spot and his face went from annoyed to shocked and worried. But Pansy had advanced on Ron. “What is your problem, Weasley?” She yelled, pulling out her wand. “All we did was ask you to move so we could get to class. We’ve all changed!”
Hermione was watching Pansy fearfully and Ron was starting to pull out his own wand. But in all the confusion Malfoy walked away quickly in the opposite direction.
Pansy dropped her arm to her side and turned to watch Draco leave.“Dray, wait!” Pansy called and dashed after him. Blaise followed and they both disappeared around the corner.
Ron was breathing heavily, his face red with fury. He walked back to where they had been standing. “Let’s go back to the common room,” he said, and he stormed away.
Harry and Hermione caught up with Ron and they walked in silence for a while. But after a few minutes Hermione built up the courage to say, “They…They really have changed, Ron.”
Ron snorted and started walking more quickly. “Yeah, they’ve definitely changed. How would you know anyway?” Ron shot suddenly at Hermione.
She didn’t answer but instead looked down at her feet and continued walking. Harry watched her but didn’t say anything. They eventually reached The Fat Lady’s portrait. Ron gave her the password and then dashed inside. Harry and Hermione
hesitated. They exchanged looks before entering the common room themselves.Ron had clearly not forgiven the Slytherins for what they had done.
