The next day Harry, Ron, and Hermione finished their morning classes and went off to lunch. As soon as Harry saw Draco Malfoy stand up from the Slytherin table he jumped up too.
“Where are you going, Mate?” Ron said, dropping his fork in surprise.
“I’ve just got something to do,” Harry said, swinging his school bag over his shoulder.
“You’re going to be late for Herbology,” Hermione called as Harry rushed out of the hall.
Harry caught up with Malfoy and he jumped when he saw Harry. “Potter? What are you doing?”
Harry slowed down and walked next to Malfoy as they both set off down the corridor. “I just wanted to apologize.”
Malfoy looked at him suspiciously. But he ignored Harry and sped up. Harry ran to catch up with him. Malfoy didn’t say anything but he let Harry walk beside him.
“Why?” Malfoy finally said, not looking at Harry.
“What?”
“Why are you apologizing to me, Potter?” Malfoy asked, clearly annoyed with Harry.
“Well,” Harry said tentatively, wondering how to phrase what he was about to say. “Because of what Ron said…yesterday.”
Malfoy again stayed silent. He didn’t look at Harry or give any sign that he had even heard him.
But again Harry was surprised to hear Malfoy speak so suddenly. “I’m used to that. Everyone is treating me like Weasley did.” He didn’t sound upset or angry. His voice was flat and it was almost as though he didn’t care.
“I-I’m sorry,” Harry said, watching Malfoy purposely look in the other direction.
“No, you’re not.”
“What?”
Malfoy had stopped walking. Harry stopped too and turned to face Malfoy. “You’re not sorry. You’re only apologizing so you don’t feel guilty.”
“That’s not true!” Harry found himself yelling which is not what he wanted to do. He didn’t want to attract the teachers.
“Right,” Malfoy said, angrily. “It doesn’t matter anyway! Everyone is acting like that. I don’t care anymore. Alright!”
“It does matter!” Harry shouted back, clenching his fists.
Malfoy looked away, “You don’t understand. Everyone thinks it my fault. I don’t care anymore.”
They both stood there looking down at their own feet. Then after several minutes Malfoy straightened up and walked away. Harry was surprised to see angry tears in his.eyes. Malfoy didn’t turn around and Harry watched him leave.
Harry came back to reality a while after Malfoy had disappeared around the corner. He started walking off to Herbology, lost in thought. He knew he was late but he didn’t care. Harry made his way across the grounds to the greenhouses, thinking hard.
