A few days later Harry and Hermione were making their way up to the common room for their break. Hermione had insisted that they finish their work before doing
anything else. But just as Harry had given The Fat Lady the password, someone pushed the portrait whole open from the inside.
It was Ron. He was standing there looking awkward. Ron hadn’t seen Harry and Hermione since the day he had yelled at them.
“Er—hi,” Ron said, trying to grin at them. But he didn’t succeed at this. Ron backed against the wall to let Harry and Hermione pass. They ignored Ron as they walked by, which made Ron’s ears glow as red as his hair.
Harry and Hermione sat down in the armchairs in front of the fire and opened their books. Ron then came over to them.
“What?” Hermione said tersely, not looking at Ron.
Ron just stood there, his ears still red and looking worried. “I-I’m sorry,” he mumbled. “I didn’t mean to yell, I just…” His voice trailed off.
Hermione was glaring at Ron from her chair and Harry was watching this silent battle between Ron and Hermione.
Then Ron looked straight at Hermione. “I really am sorry, Hermione. I didn’t mean any of what I said.”
Hermione’s stern face faded a little as she spoke. “They really have changed Ron; the Slytherins. I know you’re upset about…about Fred but it’s not their fault.”
Ron nodded but didn’t speak. Hermione’s anger at Ron melted away. “I forgive you, Ron. But, please, try to be a bit nicer to the Slytherins.”
Ron was shocked. He stared at Hermione. “Really?” Hermione nodded and Ron beamed at her. Then he looked at Harry.
“You were being a git,” Harry said, grinning slightly. Ron nodded and looked down at his feet. “But if Hermione forgives you, so do I.”
Ron looked up again and smiled at his friends. “Thank you, and I’m really, really sorry.”
Harry laughed, “We know. You’ve mentioned that.”
Ron grinned and sat down in the other armchair, pulling out his books too.

The next day Harry was walking down the corridor with Ron to lunch, when Malfoy came up to them. Ron took one look at Malfoy and dashed into the Great Hall. Ron, instead of being nice to the Slytherins, as he had promised Hermione, had taken to
avoiding them.Harry did not follow Ron into the Great Hall however. Instead he turned to face Malfoy. “What?” Harry asked.
Malfoy looked away for saying anything. “I was wondering if you wanted to come to my dorm tomorrow night.”
Harry just stared at Malfoy who was looking anywhere but at Harry. “Why?” Harry asked, bewildered.
“I just have nothing to do,” Malfoy said, still not catching Harry’s eye. “Pansy is hanging out with your friend, Granger and Blaise has detention.”
“I…I’ll come I guess,” Harry said and Malfoy finally looked at him.
“Alright…well, I’ll see you tomorrow, Pottah,” and with that Malfoy disappeared into the Great Hall.
