It was the day of the Japanese-American Goodwill Tournament. Many students from different schools came to watch their classmates compete. I sat with Oishi and our school mates. I didn't want to distract Kunimitsu with his responsibilities as a coach.
The goodwill tournament was more intense than I have ever thought. We won one double and one last match was left between Kevin and Kirihara. I could see the anger in Kevin's keys. I knew Echizen would want to play against him. Like I said to Echizen before, I knew Kevin would do anything it takes to get Echizen on the tennis court.
What I saw next shocked me. While Kirihara was getting the ball, He slam into the pole. After Kirihara played, he dropped his racket and grabbed his shoulder. I knew he got injured. I could see that Kevin didn't care at all.
I saw Kunimitsu walk up to Kirihara and I guess he wanted to check Kirihara's shoulder. Kirihara refused and as he moved his shoulder, he grabbed it. I saw them walk away from the court. I decided to go see them at the infirmary.
I found Kirihara bandaged up on his shoulder. Kirihara kept say he wanted to continue, but Kunimitsu wouldn't allow it. "If you continue to play in your condition, your shoulder would get worse. You wouldn't be able to play in the nationals. You may never be able to play tennis again," Kunimitsu said.
I knew that his school won nationals before. Then Kirihara used Kunimitsu's own actions against him. I saw Kunimitsu eyes widen stunned at what Kirihara said. I walked over to Kunimitsu and put a hand on his shoulder. He looked down at me.
Out of nowhere, Sanada came in and gave his explanation about why Kunimitsu was stopping him from playing. He even explained that Kunimitsu didn't want to hurt me, but he had to so that he could get his team to nationals. It was decided that Kirihara would go to the hospital and Echizen would take his place.
Echizen was now playing and it was a long one. In the end, Echizen won. Tennis got really interesting for me. After the tournament was over, the Seigaku team and I went to visit Ryuzaki-sensei at the hospital. Then we saw the American team leave at the airport.
Hopefully, Kunimitsu will finish rehab soon so he can continue to play tennis.
A week later....
I was feeding the koi fishes when I felt a hand on my shoulder. I looked behind me to see Kunimitsu there. "Kunimitsu? Aren't you suppose to be in rehab?" I asked in in surprise. I stood up and stood in front of him. He came over to me and leaned to my ear and whispered.
After he whispered, I started to smile. He moved away, but I kissed him. I was happy. We pulled away and he gave me smile. Kunimitsu planned to go see Ryuzaki-sensei at school. I wanted to go with him. We walked to school together.
We went inside Ryuzaki-sensei's office and told her the news. We walked out of the office and went to the locker rooms to change into our jersey. Kunimitsu and I walked onto the tennis court together. "Wait, Echizen," he said. We all turned and saw him in his jersey. Everyone was surprised. He looked good in the jersey.
Kunimitsu wanted to serve the ball. He served the wall and hit the ball on the gate. The ball opened and came out the message : "Aim for it, Seigaku. Win the Nationals." Everyone was shocked but me. I smiled at him. He apologize to them for waiting long. Ryuzaki-sensei explained further that he was officially coming back as captain.
He was done with rehab and was returning to the tennis team. I was so happy.
