Jason POV

 

Jason sat in lit class, noticing the absence of the Italian. A sudden worm of doubt wriggled into his mind, ‘had he gone to far this time?’

“Mr. Grace,” Pluto directed at him. You could hear all heads turning to Pluto, then Jason.

Jason swallowed, he walked up to the teachers desk and Pluto asked softly, “I seem to be missing someone. And for the life of me, I can’t remember in this classroom is missing…could you remind me?”

Jason opened his mouth but then the office speakers blared, and a voice came through, “Jason Grace, please bring your things to the office. You have some visitors.”

With a sinking heart, Jason grabbed his things, and went down to the office.

“Oh, my dear boy!” sniffled Jason’s mother. “It’s your father, it seems as if…he’s not going to make it…”

Jason’s heart sunk into his feet. His father had been diagnosed with a rare kidney disease. And having one kidney, the doctors couldn’t replace it. More like, we didn’t have the money.

Jason’s family was wealthy, but the money need to help Mr. Grace would be hard to pay, even by Bill Gates.

“Dear, let’s go. They have him on life support. We have just enough time to say good-bye…” Mrs. Grace cried, hugging her boy to her chest.

Jason’s eyes filled with tears, and he looked to the left, trying to hide them, but there was enough time for him to see a flash of black.

When Jason got to the hospital he told his mother to go say good-bye first. Then he would come in. So in the mean time, Jason wondered around the hospital in a daze, grief striking his mind.

Then he saw a flash of black, and instinctively he chased after it. And no doubt about it, it was his punching bag.

Nico Di Angelo.

Being quiet, Jason observed the younger teen. Scrunching his nose at all the bruises and scrapes on Nico. But what surprised him was the note book in Nico’s hand, and how fast the pencil was writing.

Nico was in the back of the waiting room, acting like he wasn’t suppose to be there. Jason need something to do, and was going to call attention to Nico. When Nico suddenly bolted up and ran up to the front desk. Speaking in a hush tone.

The nurse looked at him with questioning eyes, but then slowly picked up the phone, speaking quietly.

Nico’s eyes widened and Jason heard, “No, please, I’m fine. Just get this to Mr. Grace’s room please. What else can you loose?”

Jason looked at the nurse who was speaking quickly into the phone now, “Yes, the younger boy is out here, he just gave me a paper. Do you mind bringing him back to his room?”

Nico’s face contorted into annoyance, and he snapped, “Fine, I’ll do it myself!” Grabbing the paper, Nico turned to run, but ran into a doctor.

A doctor I knew well. His name was Leo, he had been my father’s doctor for the longest of time now.

Nico again started speaking quickly, a look of desperation on his face. But Leo pulled out a small serine, and stuck into Nico’s neck.

Jason watched this all go down in slow motion. His mind reeling. What the hell is happening?

Nico slumped into Leo, whispering something, Leo to the piece of paper, and nodded. Then Leo called over to Jason, “Can you help me get this poor boy to his room?”

Jason nodded, and picked up the kid as if he was a rag doll. Jason was surprised, and for the first time in his life he was a bit concerned for the victim of his bullying.

Nico’s skin was pale, deep bags of crescent shaped unrest housed under his eyes, his bones defines, and he was too skinny and too light to be healthy.

“He’s in room 13. Can you wait here?” asked Leo.

“Mr. Valdze, I need to go see my father…” Jason started, but Leo shook his head, “No, your mother was not allowed either. We might have just gotten the formula to save your father’s life.”

Jason’s eyes widened with joy and he smiled, “Thanks doc, thanks.”

Leo opened his mouth as if to say something, but then looking at the sleeping boy next to Jason, he shook his head. Leo had promised not to tell Jason. And he planned to keep it that way.
