(y/n) had made arrangements with the necessary arrangements to allow Joan to be quasi-adopted by her or by the adult of Joan's choice and had offered that road to Joan one afternoon over tea, after exams of course. She watched the kid look at her in a mix of surprise and tearful joy.
"You don't have to decide now, there's a program in place here run by Pamona that assists students that can't return or are not welcome back with their families over the summer break with housing and food. Talk it over with a trusted adult like your Head of House and make your decision after you weigh your options." (y/n) passed them a box of tissues while she explained.
"How long were you stewing on this Ms. Black?" Joan wiped their eyes with a teary smile as they asked.
"Since, Miss Cho-Chang told me about the letter. I can sympathize with your situation."
"Why?" (y/n) saw the suspicion growing in their eyes.
"Ideological differences, and as long as I stayed in the Black household I'd be a pawn for my father's poorly thought out schemes."
"Thank you." Joan had wrapped their arms around (y/n) in a flash, their gratitude almost scaring her.
"Just promise to help those in need when you can and we're even." (y/n) patted the kid's back gently as she said this.
"I'll make an unbreakable vow." Joan pulled away a bit meeting her eyes to make sure she saw how serious they were.
"Hell no." (y/n) stopped that thought immediately.
"Why not?" They tilted their head curiously.
"Because helping someone because you have to and not because you want to is insincere." She smoothed out their hair, much as she does for Reggie, without thinking.
Joan stilled, making (y/n) stiffen.
"Ok, mum," Joan whispered just loud enough for her to hear before shooting out of the room faster than a seeker in a dive, leaving her stunned.
'Did I just-?' She slowly sat back in her chair trying to see where this outcome came about.
It was an hour later when the trio of Gryffindors made their way into her office and quietly sat down facing her like they were going to ask for her daughter's hand in marriage. Eventually, Ron got fed up with the tense silence and broke it like a vase in a ridiculously pink school.
"We know that the stone is in trouble and Dumbledore isn't here and We know that you think Snape has nothing to do with this, but you're the only one we can turn to so, please come with us to stop the stone from getting stolen." The ginger got out in one impressive breath.
"I didn't say Professor Snape had nothing to do with it, I said he's not your man. Full stop."
"Then who is?" Hermione seemed lost. "It all points to Snape."
"It's because you were focused on Professor Snape, and your predetermined biases, did the real evil sneak in, truly a wolf in sheep's clothing. Ah, correction, two wolves in sheep clothing like those weird horse costumes, one you see and one hidden behind." (y/n)'s lips hooked up slightly. "Much like communism, he's a red herring."
"Why are you making a Cluedo reference?" Hermione groaned.
Ron had leaned over to Harry to ask about the horse costume by that point and was given a fast and loose answer.
"Anyway. The point, could you-" Harry was cut off by her office door swinging open to reveal Severus standing there, his eye twitching when he noticed the trio within in the room.
