I was helping Mrs. Gunnerson decorate and taste testing a batch of holiday cookies.
"Alright princess, let's go before you have a sugar rush. You know how your mother feels having a lot of sugar," Grandpa said walking in.
"But they taste so good," I said. Grandpa picked me up carrying me out of the kitchen. I saw Cristal and Sam standing in a row. Grandpa joined them. "What's going on?"
"My mom's coming to visit," Sam said.
"Shoulders?" I asked. Sam picked me up on his shoulders. The door opened. Mom walked in looking confused.
"Intervention or surprise party?" Mom asked.
"Welcome wagon, actually," Grandpa said.
"Not for you," Sam said.
"Thank God. I was afraid I'd have to act grateful," Mom said closing the door.
"My sister's on her way," Cristal said while Mom put her bag down.
"Goodie. Santa got me what I wanted, another Cristal," Mom said.
"Fallon, best behavior," Grandpa said.
"Why is my child on your shoulders?" Mom asked Sam.
"I'm taller than you now," I said sticking my tongue out at Mom.
"Get down befo-" I cut Mom off leaning backward and letting go of Sam. Mom caught me before I fell to the floor. "You are going to put me in the hospital with a heart attack one day," Mom said setting me on my feet.
"It's Christmas," I yelled. Mom picked me up. The door opened revealing Anders.
"Are you kidding me?" Sam asked.
"I'm sorry to disappoint. But I believe this is who you're waiting for," Anders stood aside revealing a short woman that looked like Cristal. Sam hugged her and then Cristal hugged her. They spoke in Spanish. I zoned out until I felt someone hugging Mom and me.
"Must be nice having your mom for Christmas," Mom said to Sam.
"Best gift anyone can give is family," Sam said.
"Yes. Other than a trust fund and personal space. Okay, Google. How do I say "space" in Spanish?" Mom asked her phone.
"Follow me, I've had Mrs. Gunnerson arrange lunch. Double helpings in case mother eats like son," Anders said.
"Have you hidden the silverware?" Mom asked quietly while Sam and his mom and Grandpa and Cristal were talking.
"All locked away," Anders said.
"Ho, ho, ho," Grampy said bursting through the door.
"Dad?" Grandpa asked.
"Grandpa?" Mom asked.
