this chapter mentions death. please read with caution.coughs erupted from jungkook's lungs as he squeezed his chest, trying to ease the pain in his lungs. he leaned his body on the side and reached for the emergency blue button that's supposed to be pressed when a patient needs urgent help. jungkook winced when he felt blood staining his hands and his scrubs— metallic like taste filling his tongue.
the coughs didn't stop as he laid down on his back and tries to catch air but he couldn't. he feels suffocated over nothing. he kicked the foot frame of his bed and cried. the pain on his chest was excruciating. as if his chest is being torn apart, he closed his eyes tight and let a sob escape free from his lips.
"jungkook!" his name was called by the familiar voice of his nurse but he couldn't bear to open his eyes. it's like pain is taking him away. as if the pain is drowning him. the familiar feeling of the oxygen mask made jungkook open his eyes as he held it close on his nose and lips. it felt like a breathe of fresh air. the pain slowly faded away as he felt needles poking his bruised skin. jungkook's eyes closed but before his eyes can close completely and his senses to shut completely, he heard the four words that made him extremely weak.
"stay with us, jungkook."
—
"how are you feeling?" jungkook looked up at seokjin who's occupied with preparing the homemade meals he made for the younger. jungkook kept quiet and looked at the window placed on the leftmost wall of his hospital room that overlooks seoul. the buildings that are lit up with lights that made it look like stars from below from where jungkook is. and real stars above can be seen clearly. these days, it's what calms jungkook— the stars.
when he was young, his grandmother died. jungkook was there, holding her hand and watching her peacefully slip away from them. jungkook cried so much to the point that he couldn't breathe anymore. but his dad told him that people who slip away from them becomes stars. that they'll always be there even if we can't see them. and jungkook held onto that.
everytime he's sad, he'll look up at the night sky and feel the arms of the people he lost embracing him and telling him that everything's going to be fine.
"jungkookie!" he looked away from the window when he heard his little sister calling out for him. a smile bloomed on his lips as he opened his arms and let jungwon jump in his arms. "i missed you!" jungkook chuckled and tightened his arms around his sister's. "i missed you too, uno." he ruffled her hair and tucked a dangling, loose hair strand behind her ear and gazed at her beaming face. if happiness is a person, it would be jungwon.
"oh look, i lost my front tooth!" jungwon pointed at her absent front tooth that caused jungkook to giggle. "did it hurt, princess?" "nuh-uh, i didn't cried! i'm a big girl now but namjoon hyungie helped me take it out!" jungkook looked up and saw namjoon sitting on the couch with a small smile on his lips. jungkook returned the smile, feeling a little jealous and guilty because that should be him. that should be him spending time with her. that should be his job spending time with jungwon as her older brother. that should be him doing all those typical things brothers do with their sisters— help them with their homeworks, protect them from all the bad guys that scares them, protect them from the imaginary ghosts under their beds and more things that jungkook failed to do with jungwon.
"eat up, jungkook. i sneaked in some chicken poppers with me." jungkook's eyes sparkled in joy as his eyes curled into crescents when he popped a fillet in his mouth. moaning in satisfaction, jungkook clapped his hands and let his mouth savor the chicken he haven't tasted for months.
