wherein jeon jungkook tries to gain the trust of his step-daughter, kim jungwon.

"happiest birthday, mi love."

jungkook, your step-father, handed you your gift as you sent him a small smile. he walked back and stood beside your mother who's staring at you with her usual proud eyes filled with nothing but love. he wrapped his arm around your mother's shoulder and pressed a kiss on the side of her head like he always do. he's the sweetest, kindest and the easiest person to love in the whole entire universe yet something in you prevents you from accepting him as your father.

"thankyou . . ." you quietly said as you placed the gift on the table in front of you. you looked at them and waited for them to say something. your eyes met jungkook's and you saw the sadness in it once again yet he quickly covered it and hid it behind his happy, sparkly eyes, "do you want to open it, uno?"

uno. the nickname your biological father gave you. he told you that your name sounds like jungone and in coincidence, you're their first-born child. and so, the nickname uno was created which means one in spanish — your father was very interested in learning languages when he was still alive. but his love for music is something unbeatable (though he'd choose you over music) he said that music is one of the strongest ways to break down the language barrier. that music delivers messages that no words nor language can do.

"can i?" you asked as jungkook nodded with a smile, "of course, uno!" the moment the nickname slipped out of his lips, his smile vanished and his eyed widened. a frown made its way to his expression and guilt filled his eyes. but before he could say anything, you shook your head and carefully tore the wrapper. you ignored jungkook's guilty eyes as you felt how tears welled up in your eyes along with the choking feeling burning on your throat.

you're excited deep inside about the gift because it's been so long since you received a gift from anyone. back when your father was still alive, he would always gift you with unique things. every year, you'll receive something very different from the previous gifts and that's one of the reasons why you would count the days before your next birthday. he once gave you a notebook and a pen and told you that you would write there every day no matter how bad or good your day went, no matter what emotions you felt that day — you have to write your thoughts down on the notebook.

you were young but the gift made you realize that each day is a new day to be happy and fix the mistakes you did yesterday. that even though you're a bad person yesterday, yesterday's you is still you — and you can change and fix that through realizing all your mistakes and wrongdoings. and that made you a better person each day.

you remember one day, you had an argument with your mom about something shallow yet made you mad. you shouted at her due to the running and wild emotions in you. your dad saw that and he saw how heartbroken his wife is the moment you shouted at her so he told areum, your mother, to go back to the bedroom and he'll be the one to handle you because he saw how you're sulking on the corner, back raising up and down.

he didn't uttered  word. he handed you the notebook and looked at you in the eyes with the look you know too well. you're not in trouble. you had a good relationship with your father, he's your bestfriend, will always be your bestfriend. that moment, you wrote your thoughts on your notebook and with every word that you wrote down, you realized that you were on the wrong. that you shouldn't have shouted at your mother. that it's wrong. you felt guilty. so you ran down and hugged your mother as if she's going to vanish in the air — and that's what namjoon wanted you to be. that's the person he wanted his daughter to be.

your mother and jungkook had been married for two years now, you're nine when they got married. it was hard for you to see your mother looking at another man with those same eyes that held love the same way she did with your father. it was hard watching her doing the same things she used to do to your father. it was hard watching her loving another man that isn't your father.
