Since that day I've visited Kuro a lot more than usual. I come almost everyday, never failing to bring him a bouquet each time. We talked a lot during that time, I observed things about Kuro I'd never noticed before. Like how he always stares at the ceiling during the silence, or how he licks his lips from time to time before talking, or how he plays with the petals of the orchids I give him so delicately as if they are a sacred object.
All these things made me fall in love with him a little bit more every time.
"Kenma..." Kuro smiled weakly as he saw me walk through the door.
"Hello darling..." I greet him with a somewhat hug.
He gasped "Darling...?"
"It's cute isn't it" I blushed and looked up at the ceiling, a nervous habit I developed from him.
"I agree it's really cute" He gently took my hands in his and I looked over to see his face, he was smiling from ear to ear "I just never took you as the type to use pet names, I mean you've never used any for m-" He coughed into his shoulder and I squeezed his hands tight.
He let go of my hands and laid back down, smiling at the ceiling. How could he smile so much in this condition? He coughed into his hand, louder than last time but not to a concerning level.
"You know Kenma...Orchids are really pretty aren't they" He held up a singular flower that I'd gotten him the day before.
"Not as beautiful as you..." I muttered, the same as the day that Kuro was taken to the ambulance.
He somehow mustered up the strength to sit up slightly and pull me close to him by my shirt, his lips brushed against mine and left as quickly as they came.
He coughed into his hands once more, turning away from me this time, I was sure there was blood.
He turned back onto his back and sighed, a smile still plastered onto his face.
He picked the stem off of a flower and began ripping petals off it, seeming lost in thought, He did this a lot, I noticed it more frequently this month.
We sat in a comfortable silence, until it was broken by the sound of humming. I looked up from my book to find Kuro still there, his eyes were closed as he worked with the petals, humming a distant song which I recognized but couldn't name. I didn't ask the name, I instead smiled to myself and listened to the sound of his sweet voice.
One of the windows next to his bed was open, letting in the warm springtime like air and the smell of wet grass and rain. We'd been getting a lot of rain recently, it tapped quietly on the other window which was closed.
I continued to read my book, listening to the sound of Kuro's humming, which was only interrupted by coughs and small quick breaths before continuing.
We stayed like that for a bit until the nurse came in to give Kuro his medicine.
"Visiting hours are almost over" They told me as Kuro gulped down some water.
"I know..." I muttered in response. She smiled and exited, but I knew I'd see her again in around 10 minutes telling me that I have to leave.
"Kenma.." Kuro turned his head to look at me, still laying on his back.
"I love you"
