Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you

As I rolled over in bed, I covered my head with my blanket as I heard singing.

I pulled the cover off, and saw my mom holding a cupcake, Alena and Valentina at either side of her.

"Happy birthday, my legal driver.", mom hugged me.

"What time is it?", I asked.

"12 am. But it's technically not your birthday until later.

To clear it up, I was born on September 17, at 9:17 am.

Coincidence? Maybe.

"Where's dad? Is he going to be able to come later?", I asked.

"He said he'll try, babe. But don't be too upset. You've got a whole party waiting for you tonight. Now, go back to bed. I'll be back up later.", mom sighed, before she kissed my forehead, as the girls hugged me.

I climbed back under the covers, and fell into a deep sleep.

I woke up a few hours later, to the girls jumping on my bed, and the dogs barking like crazy.

"Ashley, it's your birthday!", Alena exclaimed.

"I know. Why are you guys up?", I yawned.

"Because it's your special day. Aunt Katie and Uncle Mikey are downstairs!", Alena nearly dragged me out of bed, and I had to practically pull her off me.

I carried her in one arm, Val in the other as I walked downstairs.

"Happy birthday!", Katie and Mikey exclaimed.

"Thank you.", I yawned.

"We told them not to wake you up, but they're so excited for your special day.", Katie hugged me.

"It's not that special.", I mumbled.

Mikey nearly dropped his coffee.

"Not special? Hon, your sweet sixteen is more than important. It's like a holiday!", he exclaimed.

"He's right. I remember my sweet sixteen. It was probably the best day of my life.", Katie looked up into the sky as if she was daydreaming.

"Okay then. It is important.", I put up my hand in defense as I went to the pantry.

"Are you really going to eat cereal? On your birthday?", Katie asked.

"Um, yeah. What's your point?", I asked.

Mikey snatched the box out of my hand.

"Hey!"

"Her point is, that it's your birthday. We're obviously taking you out for breakfast. Since making you food has failed.", Mikey looked at Katie.

"I tried, okay?", she replied.

I laughed a little.

"Now, go get dressed.", Mikey shooed me off to my room.

As I put out my clothes, I got a FaceTime call from Joe.

"Happy birthday!", everyone exclaimed.

Sophie, Priyanka, Nick, Joe and dad.

I gave them my best fake smile, trying to hide the fact that I was disappointed they couldn't make it.

"How's everything going? Holding down the fort?", dad asked.

"Trying my best.", I replied, looking down.

I heard dad ask to talk to me in private for a second, and I sighed.
