Laney Sherman woke to the sound of Train's Hey Soul Sister. It was ten o'clock on Saturday, and she had been out the night before. Her evening couldn't be classified as fun, but after she returned home at midnight, she spent some time winding down by painting. It was not easy trying to make a living as an artist. If her parents weren't so wonderful, they would say she was crazy. Instead, they converted the room over the garage into a studio/bedroom for her. Her Dad surprised her when he suggested adding a separate entrance so she could have some freedom. Most parents wanted their twenty-something out of the house, but her parents were making it easy for her to stay.
It could be because she and her sister Skylar came along after years of wanting. It was her older sister calling her, and she reached for her phone.
"What?" It sounded more like a grunt.
"Were you asleep?" Skyler sounded chipper.
"It's Saturday." she groaned.
"You have no schedule. Every day can be Saturday for you."
"Except Saturday follows a night out with Jaz."
"Better you than me."
With a husband and a baby on the way, Skylar was settled. She was also one birthday away from thirty. Laney was twenty-five, with four and a half years between them. She was an introvert, much happier spending an evening alone painting. Her best friend Jazmin was the opposite, so occasionally she gave in and let her hair down.
"Why did you feel the need to wake me?" She suddenly remembered Hari's nephew, the five-year-old battling leukemia. "Is Anjay doing okay?"
"He is. Remarkably, really, with the bone marrow and treatment..."
It was hard to imagine the small boy going through so much and his poor parents unthinkable. It had been hard on her sister and the Patel family.
"Let's go to lunch. My treat."
Laney wanted to react. Her income level couldn't come close to Skylar and Hari's dual income. They had a nice house, and she had a room above the garage in their parent's home.
"Okay, but you have me worried. You're usually too busy for me on Saturdays."
Working full time, Skylar spent Saturdays cleaning, shopping, and doing all the things that came with owning a home. Hari was a help, but he wasn't very useful. Skylar often joked that other than the vacuum, household appliances scared him, especially the stove and washing machine. He did, however, have a good relationship with the lawn mower.
"I miss you. We never see each other."
True, because her older sister had a life and another family who was far more demanding than their own parents.
Two hours later, she stood in the entrance to Applebee's, waiting for her sister. No surprise, she was late. Their father often said that late should be Skylar's middle name. She rushed in and Laney was hit with how cute she looked with her baby bump. She was just six months along and showing. They hugged in front of the hostess stand while a girl about eighteen smiled at them. She probably thought they were old.
