New's POV
I had no idea how I had wound up here. The speakers were blasting some mainstream pop music, and people were surrounding me – some betas and omegas, but predominantly alphas. Their scents filled the room and pierced my nose, making me shiver and dizzy from the pheromones. I was hot and bothered due to the heat, a drink was stuck to my hand, sticky and chilly on my sweaty skin.
I didn't drink much since I didn't like the taste, but I did indulge every now and then. I hadn't planned on having one tonight. I was prepared to be sober and attentive, but Win had put it into my hand before I could protest.
Win, who had been standing right next to me just a moment ago, was nowhere to be found. For the umpteenth time today, I wished Krist had stayed for the summer and was right here with me. To be honest, if Krist opted to stay, I wouldn't be here right now. Even if the parties in the university's largest alpha-beta fraternity were legendary, he wouldn't dare to enter one.
Despite my previous distaste for frat parties, their reputation persuaded me to attend one, and while I admit that it was a really cool party — even in the middle of the summer when more than half of the students have left — I wasn't sure how much I would enjoy it.
If Krist were here, he'd definitely criticize me for doing what I wanted. Going to a party in pursuit of rebound sex was a no-no in his book, and he would have probably forced me to abstain. But I hadn't told him that Earth had broken up with me and it had been over two weeks since.
To be fair, my heartbreak had gotten the best of me. I had been too busy crying or eating ice cream and other comfort foods or yelling at the wall or looking through images of the two of us on my phone — I can't even think about deleting them right now — or staring at the familiar phone number and forcing myself not to hit the call button and beg Earth to take me back.
I hadn't told anyone but Win, who had invited me out for some fun and to distract me from the numbing agony in my heart. Win, on the other hand, would be more concerned if he knew I was looking for a hookup to distract myself from my ex. I sighed and concluded I couldn't wait any longer.
That's a lie. I decided to stay a little longer — at least long enough to unwind a little. After that, I decided to go get another drink.
With the exception of a random couple kissing each other's faces in the corner and a guy slumped over the counter with his mouth gaping open, the kitchen was mostly deserted.
I steered clear of the crowd and poured myself another glass while singing under my breath. The startling appearance of someone to my right caused me to pause for a moment. My omega was whining because of the strong scent of wood sage, sea salt, and a smidgeon of dark chocolate. I turned to meet the eyes of an alpha who was already swarming me with his gaze.
The alpha was slim and broad, wearing several rings, black skinny jeans, and a thin white shirt that showed off his muscles. He was unmistakably a frat boy, but one who was absolutely beautiful. As he smirked, he also had dark, piercing ebony eyes that locked onto mine.
"Enjoying the party?"
"It's alright," I said nonchalantly.
A shiver of excitement surged through my body, running through my veins and growing stronger as the man drew in closer, opening his mouth and saying—
"Hey!" yelled someone. We both jumped as we turned around to see another frat boy who appeared pissed and panicked. "Vihokratana, we need your help!"
When the alpha sighed next to me, I felt a tinge of disappointment. It was a bad idea. We only exchanged three words with each other. Even though nothing happened, I felt as if I was missing something vital.
