New's POV

The rest of the morning passed in a bit of a haze. I ended up taking another two tests, not wanting all of this worrying and planning to be for nothing. Three tests confirmed the notion as a hard fact. I was pregnant — about two months in.

I was a little worried at first, unsure if I'd done anything potentially harmful, if not downright dangerous, to the bundle of cells growing in my tummy, but Krist pointed out that I hadn't had any alcohol this term except for that one drink at the party a couple of weeks ago. That one drink wasn't enough to have a major impact and the thought made me feel a lot better. I then realized that I'd have to stop dancing for a few months, especially once I'm too big to physically move.

I cried a little when I realized what had happened, but I could now blame it on hormones, so I basked in self-pity for as long as I wanted before emailing the company director and notifying him of the issue. I also emailed the school to inquire about their policy regarding pregnant omegas continuing to work, as I worked as a library assistant a couple of times a week before I scheduled my doctor's visit for the next week. I was going to do everything I could to preserve what would become my future pup now that I knew I was pregnant. My unexpected protectiveness shocked me at first, but all things considered, I felt like I fit into the role quite readily.

Krist then made me eat lunch at 12:30 p.m., hovering over me and ensuring I ate something nutritious. I instantly became irritated, but at the same time, I greatly appreciated it. I was fortunate that Krist was on my side, and I knew that if I told Gun, the omega would be on my side as well.

At 2:00 p.m., I finally summoned the confidence to confront the most — alright, second-most — terrifying aspect of the process: telling my mom.

Despite the hot weather, I locked myself in my room and wrapped myself in blankets, then dialed the familiar number and swallowed nervously.

Mom picked up on the third ring and greeted me warmly. "My baby! How are you?"

I smiled, stress seeping from my tight body at my mother's loving voice.

"Hey, Mom," I said. "I'm alright... I actually wanted to talk to you about something."

"Oh, what is it, darling?" she asked, curiosity evident in her tone. "Did you meet someone?"

I flinched. That was unexpected, and now that I think about it, I'm pretty sure that someone wasn't in my plans for a long time.

"Uhm, no... but there is someone else who recently became part of my life," I said, fiddling with my sweater nervously. I swallowed and then...

"Who?" Mom asked, sounding understandably confused.

"Mom." I quickly closed my eyes. I had intended to build up to it — starting with the usual small conversation, inquiring about my sisters' shenanigans, and inevitably procrastinating as long as possible before bringing up the elephant in the room — but now that I was here, I just needed to get it out. I needed the security and comfort that I knew my mother would provide. "Mom, I'm pregnant."

There was a long silence during which all I could hear was my mother's heavy breathing. Her breath caught in her throat as she processed what I had just uttered, and I winced, closing my eyes tight. Another overwhelming thirty seconds passed before she resumed speaking.

"New, sweetheart, did I hear that correctly. You're–"

"Pregnant," I said, blinking away more tears. I had cried so much today, and it was still early afternoon, and I realized I'd have plenty more tears to cry in the months ahead before I sniffled. "I'm having a baby, Mom."
