New's POV
"You're pregnant!" Win shouted, eyes impossibly wide.
I squirmed in my seat, slouching even more. People turned around and glanced at us, making me blush with embarrassment.
"Win, lower your voice," I said.
We were in the middle of a lecture. Since Win was also an English major, there was always a possibility we'd be in a class together throughout the semester. This semester, we were really fortunate.
I'd already decided that I'd had enough of setting up elaborate meetings and breaking the news, so I casually stated it to the beta as the bell rang.
"What the fuck?" Win said, completely disregarding my plea to be quiet.
I huffed. "We'll talk about this more later, pay attention!"
Since Win was still staring at me, I stretched out and tilted his head to the front, where the professor had already begun rambling on about the current unit.
"But–"
"Shh," I whispered, my palm pressed over his mouth. "After class."
Win licked my hand, which I removed with a disgusted expression.
"Ew!" I was so grossed out that I made a show of wiping my palm on the armchair rest, and Win poked at me with his tongue.
"Is it Earth's?" he asked as he regained his composure.
I frowned, knowing that my ex-boyfriend would always be the first assumption for paternal identity whenever I broke the news.
"No, it's not."
Win froze with his jaw agape and brows wrinkled. "Is it Tay's?"
I flinched, startled by his words, and then slowly nodded.
"Oh my god!" Win said, his mind completely blown.
"Quite a situation I've found myself in," I said jokingly, but the beta didn't even crack a smile.
He bit his lip. "It makes sense now," he said after a pause.
"What makes sense?"
"Why Tay was so concerned. I bet his alpha sensed it," said Win. "He was really concerned a few weeks back, and he kept pestering me to see if you were okay. It's as though he sensed something was wrong."
I blinked, attempting to ignore the flood of emotions triggered by Win's disclosure.
"That's... a fair point. There's a lot of research about alphas being able to sense when their omega is having their pup, but... it's usually only for mated couples and Tay and I are definitely not mated."
"Yeah, you guys barely know each other."
I flinched once again.
Win's face turned white. "That's not– I didn't... I'm sorry, that was not a nice thing to say." He looked ashamed.
"It's okay," I said after a moment, hunching into myself. "You're right."
"But–"
When a loud cleared throat interrupted our chat, we turned to the front of the room, where the professor was glaring at us with crossed arms.
"Done socializing?" he asked.
We exchanged apologies, and I remained silent for the remainder of the lecture, attempting to concentrate but being distracted by a variety of thoughts. Most of which was Tay. It irritated me that I couldn't stop thinking about the alpha, even though I knew it wouldn't yield any benefits. All it would do was break my heart even more than it already was. To make it bearable, I concentrated on Tay and what he would do. He hadn't gotten back to me yet and it has been five days. It's Thursday, and I was becoming increasingly concerned with each passing hour.
