Taehyung half-expected it to not hurt anymore. It had happened so many times to him that he should be used to it by now. No matter where he went, he was always being ignored and left out. It wasn't always their fault, sometimes it was his own. He didn't like to admit it, but he was true.
People weren't always mean to him, but he wanted to think that way. It would be easier to accept that he was the way he was if he thought like that. People tried to say hi to him, tried to engage him, but he would never get the hints and they would lose interest. By the time Taehyung would understand what was being said, the topic would have already moved on. Then he was done. People would talk over him and he would be forgotten.
But though these experiences hurt no matter who was involved with it, it was a special kind of pain when the members did it. They knew him. They knew what he was like. He had trusted them. The whole experience reminded him of everything that he had faced.
It had led him to think, what had really happened to him behind the scenes?
--------
In elementary school, Taehyung had actually been fine. He wasn't so scared of people and was confident when talking. Sure, he was still shy, but it wasn't pervasive. It didn't invade every aspect of his life and make him feel miserable. It didn't make him overthink every word he said and every thing that he did. Back then, he had the heart to laugh at himself. He had been the life of the party. Being popular wasn't something that he had wanted to be or really tried to be, but he just became that way.
He had a way with himself, that's what it was. He was able to be himself.
He had a lot of friends and was always the center of attention. Taehyung would sometimes push others away when they tried to be friends with him. He was the cool kid, he could do anything he wanted. People would always look up to him. He got in trouble often, but the teachers loved him. They had to. He was goofy and silly. He was cool. He was everything that the fans saw him as.
But he fell off of that high as quickly as it had started.
For his first year of middle school, he went to a new school. He had one of his best friends go with him. Together, they maintained that friendship but he couldn't create that with his new classmates. For the first time in his life, he found himself being awkward and unable to talk to anyone. He was aware of just how much he stuck out.
His interests were stupid. He was aware of that. He was made fun of for his music taste. But he was also annoying, telling everyone about his favourite bands and how they were better than anything else people liked. Taehyung didn't understand it at the time, but he was setting himself up for failure just by talking about himself.
Years later, he had learned to never talk about himself. If anybody asked what he liked to do, all he offered was a tight-lipped smile. Taehyung didn't have any hobbies anymore. Everything had been taken out from him.
At the end of that first year, his best friend moved away. That was when the shit really hit the fan.
-------
A group of the others were sitting in the corner of the playground. They were the closest people to friends that Taehyung had.
He headed over.
They were talking about something in hushed voices. He was just about to start listening in, when-
"Taehyung, I didn't know you were here!" Junmyeon said.
