Rick POV
I watched as the Governor stood before he spoke, "You know, the truth is I didn't want any of this. They chose me because there was nobody else around. And they still think that I'm the man that can keep them safe. They still think I know what I'm doing." The reason they thought that was because he was a charmer, easily put everyone under his spell. He grabbed his holster belt, and put it back on, "I know you got guns. Mmm. That was quite a stash you brought back the other day. Now, my people, they're not combat-tested like yours are, but I've got more of them. So this fight, it will go down to the last man." I knew this man has been watching us, he just confirmed my thoughts. He walks over towards me, "So let's end it. Today. Let's not do this. We can walk away. You have some things that I want. Two things that makes this all all right." I didn't know what he meant by two, I know he wanted the prison, but what else. I shake my head, "I'm not giving up the prison." He laughs and sits down, "No. No, I-- I don't want your prison. That doesn't sound safe at all. I mean, you lost your wife, another man." Did he want us gone? I shrugged, "We're not moving on." He smiles, "What good would that do me? Best you stay where I can keep my one good eye on you." He takes off his eyepatch revealing his wound, "I want Michonne and I want Madison and our baby. I saw her head into a store looking at pregnancy test, and she came out all teary-eyed, she's pregnant, I know it. Turn them over and this all goes away. Are they worth it?" I glared at him as I could see the evil look in his eye. He shrugs, "Two women and my unborn child... worth all those lives at your prison? Are they? You know I'm right." I couldn't possibly give up Madison, but by his terms, if I did everyone else would live.
I shrugged, "Yeah, I don't get it. You've obviously got big plans. Like you're the guy who's gonna lick this thing. Bring us back from the brink. So why waste your time on a two-bit vendetta? Why risk it all?" I was really trying to wrap my head around it, "You could have a statue of yourself in the town square, Governor. killing Michonne is sort of beneath you, don't you think? And what makes you think Madison will want to raise your child with you after what happened?" Madison would never. He shrugs, "She'll have to learn to live with it, or she will die. You on the other hand, could save your son. Save your daughter. Save Madison's daughter. Everyone you know. It's your choice." It was moments like this that I hated being the leader, either way someone dies. It just depends on the quantity, if I give them up, they will die. If I don't, everyone will die. But it was Madison, my Madison. The girl I love now, how could I give her up and live with myself. "If I give you Michonne and Madison, how do I know you'll keep your word that you'll stop?" He shrugs, "You can have everything you want. I told you, I don't care about you." He stands up, "You think about it. Two days. I'll be here at noon." With that he leaves the building, leaving me with my thoughts. I follow after him and we all get in our separate cars that head in different direction. I let the thoughts take over as I drove home.
When we arrived back to the prison, Madison was the first person I was looking for. I had to see her, hopefully seeing her would make me decide against it. Carl had informed me of what happened while I was gone and what Madison had to do to Merle. I walked towards the gate where she was keeping watch and she turned back to me, "You scared me." I placed a hand on her stomach, "How's the baby? I heard what happened with Merle." She laughs, "It was a pretty good headlock Rick, almost better than the ones I'd give you as kids." I unmeaningly just stared at her taking in all of her beauty. The way her brown hair flowed, to the dimples when she smiled. Depending on my choices, this could be the last time I saw her. Her energy, her passion, my love for her, could it really be worth all the lives here. "You're so beautiful." I tell her and she laughs nervously, "I thought we agreed to put this on hold." I grab her hand and look into her eyes, "Madison, in this world, you truly never know if you'll live to see tomorrow. I know that I love you, and I know that we can figure whatever this life sends us together." She smiles, "Keep talking." I place my hands around her waist, "I want to be with you. I promise I can be whatever you need me to be. Together we can raise Carl, Joey, Judith, and this baby. This baby can be ours, I can help you. I love you Madison." Tears start to fill her eyes as she nods, "I love you too, Rick Grimes." I lean in and kiss her, and passion within the kiss was pure magic. She grabs my hand laughing as she pulls me inside the hallway. I softly push her against the wall as she deepens the kiss. We break apart and she starts to button down my shirt, I look up to her, "Madison, are you sure?" She nods and starts to undo my belt buckle. I pull her shirt over her head, and she slips off her pants. I start to kiss her neck, when the sound of a door opening causes me to cover her. "Hey, Rick-" Daryl starts before taking in the scene in front of him, and turns around heading back into the cellblock. Madison hides her face in my neck as she starts laughing. She leans down grabbing my shirt and tosses it to me, "You better get going Grimes." I smile at her before buttoning up my shirt. I look back at her to see her softly pulling her clothes back on. I walk over and pull her in for a swift kiss, "I'll see you alone in a bit." She smiles and bites her lip, "Looking forward to it."
Madison and I walked out to the cell block where the rest of the group was. Everyone turned to look at me, and I sighed, "So, I met this Governor. Sat with him for quite a while." "Just the two of you?" Merle asks and I nod, "Yeah." I looked at Madison, who gave me a small smile. "He wants the prison. He wants us gone. Dead. He wants us dead for what we did to Woodbury. We're going to war." Everyone looked terrified, but what could I do? I couldn't hand them over, could I?
I had walked out to the cat walk to clear my head, I knew what needed to happen. As much as I love her I needed to do this. When I heard the door open, I looked over to see Hershel crutch over to me. He sighed, "The group's taking it as well as can be expected. Merle and Michonne are convinced we should hit first. Carol and I think we should take our chances on the road. We're in this together. So if we stay and fight, so be it." Hershel was someone you could trust, maybe he could help me choose. I look at him, "He gave me a choice. A way out." Hershel gives me a confused look, "What does he want?" I run a hand through my hair, "Michonne and Madison. He wants the baby." Hershel looks at me, "He'll kill her, and probably Madison too after she has the baby." I nod, "Then kill us anyway. What if he doesn't? What if this is the answer?" He looks down, "Why didn't you tell them?" I shrug, "They need to be scared." Hershel nods, "They are." I sigh, "Good. 'Cause that's the only way they'll accept it." He looked at me, "Madison saved my life. And Carl's. Glenn, Maggie, so has Michonne. if Michonne hadn't come here, we never would have known they were taken. They've earned their place. Their family." He made a point, and a very good one. No body would be here today if it wasn't for Madison or Michonne. I nod, "Yeah. Yeah, they have. Are you willing to sacrifice your daughters' lives for them?" He looks to me confused, "Why are you telling me?" I sigh, "Because... I'm hoping you can talk me out of it. I love Madison, I really do, but how do I choose between her living or my children? If I give her to the Governor, my children live, if I don't my children die." "Have you told her?" He asks me and I shake my head, "No, and I won't not until I make up my mind. I just can't help to look at her and think it's the last time I'll ever see her alive."
