Sarah looked like she would cry any moment, but she didn’t.

I had heard the phrase ‘Soulless shell’ but this time around, one was right in front of me.

Did we really mean that much to her? I shouldn’t.

“Sarah” I called. She didn’t respond.

“I want you to know…I don’t care about the rules”

She looked at me

“You can’t not care about the rules, Luke. They were laid down by The Committee and the Sirens as a joint pact! You are the next head”

“I’m ready to give up that position and live as an outcast, or criminal. I don’t care who I let down. I won’t listen to the rules if they separate me from you”

“Don’t you dare let down your people!” she warned “that’s not who you are.”

The car came to an abrupt halt. Kenny was after all, the one who was driving

“Ok, Ok. Sorry Ken. I’m just comforting her you know.” I defended before he said anything.

“That’s not it” he sighed “we’re at a safe distance from them now, so I’m parking here. I’m tired. They won’t find us so easily”

We were covered by trees on all sides. We were in the middle of a forest.

“Where are we?” I asked

“No clue” he sighed “I just took the thin path from behind the orphanage”

He pushed his seat back, stretched and yawned

“I wanna sleep.”

“I don’t” Sarah and I said together.

“Let me drive” she continued “I know the gist of it”

“No” Kenny said “What we need to do now, is discuss a plan of action” He made sense “Tell me if there’s something else going on in your head.”

She sighed

“Luke, as we all know, is a Siren. Right?” she began.

Yeah. We knew that, Sarah.

“So” she continued “Didn’t you hear what that ear-piercing dude said to dad? They don’t want a Siren to lead The Committee.”

Kenny looked thoughtful

It was all making sense, why everyone was fighting.

It was because…

Wait. It—It was because of me.

“So, we’re being attacked, because of sushi?” he looked at me. I wanted to punch him, but Sarah hit him for me, so we were even.

“This isn’t a joke!” she hissed “Look. The reason this is happening is obvious. You guys are breaking the rules and you’re supposed to be leaders!”

“You know I can’t help that” Kenny closed his eyes “I love you” and opened them again, to look into her's.

“We’ve been through this” I cut in, glaring at Sarah “I’m not letting a rule get in between us.”

“Well that’s exactly why the two of you are helpless morons!” she retorted.

She looked annoyed “Why don’t you get it? Your people need you more than I do right now! Both your systems are in complete chaos. People don’t know if they’re being lead in the right direction, so they don’t know who to follow.” She grabbed mine and Kenny’s hands “and you two are the only ones who can change that. You’re the only ones with the power.”
