Kenny seemed awfully calm for the chain of events that had just taken place. His composure was well maintained and didn’t show the slightest bit of shock, as if he had expected this all along. I, who had only half the knowledge of what was going on, seemed more out of pace than he.
“Kenny, don’t you feel betrayed?” I asked
“Shock and betrayal are the feelings of a man who has given up hope.” He smiled at me, quoting his father “I want to fight to protect what’s more important to me, so I can’t give up”
It didn’t come as a surprise that he was ready to fight for his people…he was just that kind of person, but it did disappoint me that he called it ‘more important’.
Maybe I had the selfish idea that I was most important to him.
It was like being the wife of an army man—you had to understand that he belonged to his country before he belonged to you.
“Master Kenny. Field report has arrived from the spy we had implanted” Amelia hung up on the call she had been attending.
She was walking besides us down the hall on our way to the car.
“Report” Kenny ordered. She looked awkwardly at me.
“You can’t shy from her, Amelia.” He reminded her.
“My apologies” she said “The spy has found the main objective of The Just. It is the Siren throne as we had all expected, but…” she looked at me as if I was a pitiful rabbit “…they also require the help of the youngest member of the Andrew family.”
Kenny stopped midway, frozen. His eyes were wide, as if in a trance, and he seemed tense. Then, he began walking again.
“Why the Andrews?” he asked, gritting his teeth. Could it possibly be that he was afraid of these Andrews? No…this expression wasn’t fear…
“Do you know them?” I asked
“Yes” he sighed “It’s a family relationship.”
Okay. So he was being too secretive for my liking.
“Who’s the youngest one?”
“Sharon Andrews. We’ve been extremely close since we were kids” he replied, nonchalantly. There was a twitch in his eye that I was pretty sure he thought had gone un-noticed.
“Sharon…” I considered. Well, she sounded hot.
Kenny grinned at me “Jealous, are we?”
I punched his arm.
“Ow!” he rubbed it “Well, maybe I deserved that. We were in a relationship, you know.”
I wasn’t surprised.
“So, what happened to the two of you?” I continued, subtly.
“They…erm; moved away” he rubbed the back of his neck.
Whoa there! Little red flag. He was getting uncomfortable talking about this?
“And that’s why you broke up” I stopped walking, but he continued.
“Um, yeah” he nodded.
That expression he had on earlier when Amelia mentioned Sharon…it wasn’t fear; it was guilt.
“Kenny” I grabbed his elbow “what, about her, are you not telling me?”
He scanned my expression for a bit and then moved ahead towards the car “It’s nothing”
