Sunshine is beneficial to the whole planet, and can be proved to be a keystone of life. Starting simply, an average person in the sunshine for fifteen minutes will have produced their daily requirement of Vitamin D. Without this nutrient, one can develop more sensitivity to light and will also be more vulnerable to disease. However, direct sunlight past the Earth's atmosphere can be damaging. The ozone layer helps to filter out harmful UV rays that cause skin problems and severe burns.
In a deeper sense, sunlight is also food for all kinds of plants, who in turn process carbon dioxide into oxygen. This is released into the air, and is one of the main supplies.
