Lies we tell ourselves

We are all liars.  And that's the one bit of universal truth that you should know.

The lies we repeat to our children and our peers,

the feeble little words of consolidation.

The lies we say to strangers as compliments,

petty pretentious nonsense, to be honest.

The lies that are spoken in hushed whispers of fear,

too quiet for the world, yet too big to contain.

The lies that we only think in order to get us through the night,

silent vows providing a false sense of security.

The lies that swarm and buzz and rush to fill in all the empty space in the room, because these lies are the only ones who have what we want to hear. And we listen to them, all the same, lie or no lie, because in the end, our lives are built on lies, and when you stop for a moment to consider, life and lie are separated by one f, and truly,

who even gives an f?
