"On the bottom of the pyramid, is Paige." Abby says, "Did you correct the arms? Yes. Did you put the phone away? No."

Abby's reasons for putting Paige at the bottom are always weird. First, the not sitting down and now the phone? What's next? You dared to breathe the same air as me?

"She gets no credit for doing her back tuck or her press or--" Kelly says.

"Credit?" Abby asks.

"It's her phone." Kelly finishes.

Abby ignores her as she reveals the next headshot.

"Mackenzie. You can improv if you're early on the music in a solo, but when you do it in a trio and you don't tell the other two partners to do it ahead of time, you made them look like idiots 'cause you were out there, whoo, skating it up, understood?"

Kenzie slowly nods.

"Chloe. Time to face the music. Forgot your routine. You're not seven anymore. You're ten years old. You can't make up your own thing and wait to get back onto the music when thirty-five other dancers are doing the right thing. That's a pink slip. That's the unemployment line. Understood?"

Just like Kenzie, Chloe nods in response.

"Nia. You hurt your foot, you worked through it, it all worked out. However, it's the technique. It's up to you. Do you want to fix it? Do you want to make it better? Then you will. Understood?"

The typical cycle as she reveals the next headshot.

"Genevieve. You were a part of the winning trio. You were great. This week, you'll be doing a couple things of your own."

Maddie

Giselle    Brooke   Genevieve

Nia    Chloe   Mackenzie   Paige

"Chloe, you just came off a solo. You forgot your routine. You gotta get right back on that horse. You're going to be doing a solo this weekend." Abby announces, "Maddie, you were first last week, so I'm challenging you once again to do a solo at Starbound."

Maddie smiles as Abby looks over at me.

"Genevieve, you've been undefeated the last couple of times you've performed solos. You know, I think you've been undefeated all season long. You will be doing a solo this week, and it's going to be different from what you usually do." Abby says, "This might be the busiest week of your life. I know that I'm putting the pressure on you, but you know what? There's a time for pressure, and it's right now. You are representing the Abby Lee Dance Company. You are representing thirty-two years of history. Do you understand that? Don't blow it."

"I don't think that you understand quite how important this is." Abby tells us as I do some improv, "I mean, you cannot go in there and look like a slacker. You're going in front of people that have had great careers. You don't want to walk in the and be the big joke that they're gonna laugh at when they go home tonight."

We had a whole class about things that we haven't worked on in months.

It was hard.

After two hours, all of the girls, except for Chloe, sat in another room as she learned her solo. Maddie was going over some steps she wanted to perform at the audition. Kenzie was doing some of her tricks. Brooke and Nia were talking. Paige was making fun of everyone and I . . . Well, I was imagining I was already doing my audition.
