Chapter 5

Johnny Cades POV

I some somehow enjoy going to Ponyboys track meets, just watching him is enjoyable? In a way, I don't know but he's a good runner, he tends to always make the top 5 in sprint. I started staying so I had someone to walk home with after but now I actually watch it, I used to just sit there, just smoking behind the bleachers, but something about this I'm interested in now.

"You did good Pony."I said looking up at him, he was all sweaty and the street laps made him look shiny.

"Thanks JohnnyCake."He said throwing his arm around me.

"You know Ponyboy, I been thinking."I said not sure if I want to say what I was thinking, I hate it when I think.
"I think I don't ever want to lose you."

"Oh Johnny, you ain't gonna lose me, will be buddies till the day we die."Pony chuckled and ruffled my hair.

"Not like that Ponyboy."I smiled.

"Like what then?"He said, still having a small grin on his face.

"I think I might be falling in love with you Pony."I said softly, still not sure if I wanted to say it but it came out anyways. He didn't say any, just an uncomfortable silence for a moment, just for a moment though and it all happened so fast I didn't know how to react. All he did was kiss me, it's not like the other times, it seemed softer, and sweeter than the other times.

"I don't know what to say about that Johnny,other than I feel the same way."Ponyboy said. I didn't know how to feel, I was happy but there was something else that I couldn't figure out.

"I told Ponyboy I loved him."I told Dally. Dally was the only person that actually listened to what I had to say other than Ponyboy, Dally was who I let everything out too.

"Johnny, you're a kid, what'cha know about love?"He asked me, if we're being honest I have no idea.

"I don't know anything, but I know I have a strong feeling for him, and he said he felt the same."The last part was said quieter.

"Johnny, it's nice to hear that you're in love or whatever but, it's a little soon huh?"He asked, it's only been six months but I've liked him for a while.

"Six, almost seven months Dally."I said messing with my hands.

"Johnny, I mean you're happy and that's all that matters."He told me. I was happy, I am happy with Ponyboy.

"I'm really happy with him, he makes me happy."I rested my head on my hands.

"That's cute, he hurts you, you tell me, got it kid." He squinted, I nodded, I knew he wouldn't hurt Ponyboy too bad, Pony wouldn't do anything to me even if he wanted, no one could.

"He wouldn't hurt me Dally."I reassured him.

"He better not."Dally said, takins drag of his cigarette.

"I really like him."I smiled.

"I can tell."Darry put his arm around me."You two ain't doing shit you ain't supposed to huh?"

"No,we never got far enough, also you know, Pony's only fourteen, Soda had a talk with us about it."I told him.

"Alright."Dally rolled his eyes.

Ponyboy sat on the floor behind the counter, since he didn't come with me and Dally he stayed with Soda and Steve. He always just reads or draws something.

"Watch out Soda it's the hobos."Steve said as Dally and I walked in.

"Real funny."Dally scoffed, he pushed me towards Ponyboy and I looked down at what he was reading, it was some math text book.

"Man you sure are boring."I said jokingly, he looked up at me confused for a second.

"I have a test on Friday."He said going back to his book.

"So, you're to busy to talk to me?"I asked.

"Nah, what 'ya need?"He looked back down at his book.

"I don't know."I say down next to him on the floor, leaning on his  shoulder.

"Okay."He chuckled and went back to what he was doing.

"Johnny."Dally called for me, Ponyboy grabbed my hand but let it slip out of his grasp as I walked away, guess his way of saying bye while he's busy.

"Ponyboy, you want to come with us?"Dally asked, looking at Pony.

"I guess."He said getting up.

"I'm gonna take him Soda."Dally said, soda nodded in response and we left the Dx.

"That test is gonna beat me."Pony said rubbing his eye.

"You're smart Ponyboy you'll do fine."I told him, he smiled and grabbed my hand.

"Y'all try not to be so close in public."Dally said, lighting a cigarette.

"Sorry Dal."I said letting go and of Ponys hand. I really didn't want to, something about it makes me feel safe in a way, like a sense of security in his firm grasp.

I had my head resting on Ponyboys shoulder as we sat at the vacant lot, the sounds soft sounds nature filling the air.

"Ponyboy, can I tell you something?" I said, my heart racing.

"Yeah, what is it."He asked, continuing to look up at the sky as I did.

"I love you Ponyboy Curtis."

"I love you too Johnny Cade."
