A Day Earlier.

The sight of my home brings a smile to my face as I stand before it, taking in the familiar view. Everything looks exactly the same, most especially the lawn which I'm sure my grandmother has something to do with.

Me not telling them about my visit will definitely be a surprise. I didn't call my Dad, grandmother or Bobby to tell them I'm coming to Chicago for the weekend.

I start making my way towards the house but before I could get there, the front door opens up and my grandmother steps out.

Well there goes my surprise.

She's fumbling with something to put in her purse, so she hasn't seen me.

"I'll be right back—" She raises her head just then and her face strikes with shook, then surprise follows after.

"Weston?" Her voice comes out softly, bringing a wider smile to my face. I chuckle before going to her.

"Grandmother." I hug her.

"Weston?" She voiced out like she still can't believe I'm here.

I chuckle again before withdrawing from her.

"In the flesh." I don't think that phrase is used anymore.

She smiles again, but the look doesn't last long because concern takes over her expression.

"Why do you look so pale and slim?" She ask.

I hardly think that's true but somehow, grandparents and parents always seem to see you slimmer when they see you after a long time.

"And you look really stressed. I can see it behind that smile." Her hands find my face and she starts giving me facial scrutinization.

"See! You haven't even shaved." I lean into her warm touch and smile again. I have only been here for five minutes and she's already worried.

"I missed you." I say to her and she smiles again.

My grandmother started living with us after my grandfather died when I was in highschool. She has always been one of the most important people in my life.

She was even here to help my Dad when he was at his worst.

"I missed you too." She responds.

"I thought I heard someone familiar." I snap my head to the door to see my Dad standing at the porch with a big smile on his face.

"What are you doing here?" He looks as surprised as my grandmother.

"I thought you'd be at least glad to see me." I tilt my head at him and he laughs.
