May walks into the house she grew up in, it felt so familiar yet so different than the home she knew. As she walked through the house her anxiety grew, she hadn't been home in so long, she hadn't seen her family in so long and considering the circumstances of which she left she was scared of how they would greet her. She walks into the family room and sees John and lee Dutton sitting in front of the fireplace.
"Hey daddy" she says with tears in her eyes. She didn't expect to get so emotional, but the moment she saw the two men she loves the most in the world she couldn't help but tear up. John and lee both look up with the biggest smiles on their face, John gets up and walks over to her. "Hey baby girl" he says as he hugs her. In that moment she felt like she was a little girl again, when a hug from your dad felt like nothing bad can ever happen to you.
"You're all grown up" he says as he holds her face
"I thought I'd never see you again" lee jokingly said before giving her the biggest bear hug.
"Well I couldn't leave this place forever now could I?"
"I guess not. You caught me at a bad time, I've got some business to attend to but I have a lot to catch you up on. Will I see you at dinner?"
"Yeah of course"
"Alright I'll see ya" lee leaves. Both John and May go sit in the living room. "So what's been going on? Tell me everything" John says.
"What do you wanna know?"
"Everything. How was college? How's your aunt Clara?"
"It wasn't anything special, I kept to myself mostly. Claras good, she misses you guys"
"Does she?" He said in a surprised and doubtful tone
"No" she laughs "no she doesn't really care about this place at all"
"Figures, she never really liked me anyways" he's laughs then stops to look at her. He couldn't believe how much she's grown, the last time he saw her she was 16 and now she's a full grown adult. "I can't believe I missed so much of your life"
"Yeah I know"
"You understand that I did it to protect you right? I sent you away because I believed It was in your best interest"
"I'd rather not talk about that daddy. I put that in my past, I don't want to think about it anymore okay? It's like it never happened"
"It never happened" he assured her "I have to tell you something and you're not going to like it" he said
"what?"
"Jamie is still living here" a look of rage washed over her face "what?"
"Listen honey I know you two don't get along but he's still family and you just need to learn to live with him"
"You kidding right? You think I can just peacefully live here with him after what he did to me? And after all of that you are still going to defend him?"
"He's my son sweetheart, I'm not going to just disown him because of a disagreement between you two"
"He ruined my life dad, it's not just a disagreement, I hate him"
"May I-"
"No daddy im not going to sit here and listen to you defend his actions" she stops herself because she realizes arguing is useless. "I have to go. I have a meeting with the fire department about a job" she storms out. John let's out a sigh.

Later that night May gets back to the ranch. She sees a blue Toyota parked in front of the house, somehow she knew it was Jamie's "what kind of little bitch drives a Toyota?" She thought, she wasn't ready to get into a fight In that moment so she walked down to her favorite spot, her safe place as a child an old fence that looks over one of the pastures. She loved it because you could see for miles and miles, it felt like there was nothing else in the world but that land. She was sitting  when she heard footsteps approaching, she turns to see Ryan.
"Hey stranger" she says
"How did you manage to find my favorite spot to hang out?"
"Your favorite spot? I've been coming here since I was 6 years old"
"Yeah well since I've been here this has been my favorite spot"
"Oh yeah? What do you like about it then?"
"I like" he says as he climbs on the fence to sit next to her "that you could see the entire pasture from up here, that you can't see one building, not one car, or road. It feels like you are the only one here and there's not a care in the world. Would you say that's pretty accurate?" She was so lost in his eyes she almost didn't answer. "Yeah. yeah that's exactly what it's like" they both stare at each other for a second. She didn't know why but that made her feel so connected to him, it was like he knew exactly what she was thinking and it terrified her. "I only come up here when I want to run away from something. And It makes me wonder...... what are you running from?"
"It's not what, it's who. Let's just say me and my brother Jaime don't get along. So I came out here to get some peace before the storm"
"Do you want to talk about it"
"No, I don't. Not about that"
"I'm sorry"
"It's okay, really. It's just complicated, my family has been so disfuncional my whole life it's hard to believe we haven't killed each other yet" they both laugh
"But you're close with you other brothers right?"
"Yeah, well mainly lee he was really my only friend back then and Now that I think about it I don't really know Kayce that well, I left when we were both young. Rip and I are really close too, he's the only one I really kept in touch with throughout the years"
"I didn't know Rip was that close with your family"
"My father may not think so but make no mistake Rip is just as much my brother as kayce and lee" she stops for a second and chuckles to herself "I can't believe I'm telling you all of this"
"What can I say, I'm an amazing listener"
"That you are" she just stared at his face, she couldn't believe how comfortable she felt with him. " what were you running from?"
"Hmmm? Me? Nothing"
"Sure, you said you only come up here when you are running from something so go on, I spilled, it's your turn now"
He laughs "I was running from you"
"Me?"
"Ironic right? The one thing I want to get away from happens to be right where I run to"
"Wow am I really that bad?" She jokes
"No, it's actually the opposite, you're amazing. But I mean you said it yourself. Getting involved would be trouble. But the truth is I was all in the moment I first saw you, and that's surprising because I never in a million years would have thought I would feel this way about someone. I mean I've been okay with being alone for my whole life now, I actually hated the idea of being in a relationship but after meeting you, the fact that you weren't by my side has been killing me all day" he leans in to kiss her but before their lips touch she stops.
"My dad doesn't exactly have a good track record with my previous boyfriends, I could imagine the hell he would put you though if this happens"
"I don't care"
"But I do, trust me when I say it's better to keep what we have safe by not going further" she starts to tear up and they touch foreheads "something I learned growing up in this place is that all it does is take from you, till there's nothing left"
