I came down for breakfast a few days later, dressed in uniform for work. Kelly was standing at the stove, making breakfast and I wrap around her back, caressing her stomach. She turns her head to give me a kiss and feeds me some bacon.
"Perfect," I say kissing her cheek. "Can I give you a ride to work?"

"I'd like that," she says with a smile.

I help her bring breakfast to the table and she gives me a look over in my uniform. I undo some buttons, exposing the bulletproof vest and she gives me relieved eyes. I kiss her forehead and we eat the breakfast she made.

"What made you wear a vest," she asks with tears in her eyes.

I caress her stomach and meet her eyes. "The three of you are my reason for wearing a bulletproof vest," I say softly and tears roll down her cheeks. I wipe her eyes and she lets out a calming breath. "Call me if you ever need me for anything."

She nods lightly and I give her a kiss. Her phone rings and she answers it. "Hey Joyce...No, I'm okay to come in...I'll work the clinic and minor cases until the twins are born...Jennifer is bringing me in, but thank you for the offer," she says quietly and ends the call.

Carrie and I were patrolling a couple hours into our shift when dispatch came over our radio. "Jen, Kelly Dawson just called in an active shooter at Albany Medical Center. She's asking for you personally," Anna says in sympathy.

"Anna, is she safe," I ask in a choked whisper.

"Yes, she's taking cover in her office with the lights off. She said she won't come out until you get there."

"I'm on my way," I say in a protective tone and Carrie hits the siren. "I don't know what I'll do if I lose her Carrie."

"You're serious about her, aren't you," she asks in a soothing tone and I glance at her while driving. "Oh my God, you're in love with her."

"I'm crazy about her Carrie, more than I was about Jess," I choke quietly as tears roll down my cheeks. "I found out that Jess cheated on me while I was in Iraq. Kelly recognized her from our wedding photo and told me that Jess proposed to her and broke off their engagement a week before their wedding when I was discharged from services in the military. Jess never mentioned me to Kelly."

"Wait a minute, Jess cheated on you with Kelly and now you two are together," Carrie asks with surprise and confused.

"Yes, it's not like she knew I existed when she was with Jess. We're crazy about each other," I choke with a smile.

We pull into the hospital and I draw my gun. I follow the direction of people pointing and the sounds of a gun going off. Carrie and I turn our radios down. My phone vibrates with a text and I check it.

Kelly text: they're near my office. I'm scared

Me text: I'm here. Keep quiet and hidden.

I start running towards her office and duck into an empty room with Carrie while the shooter had his back to us. I'm four doors away from Kelly's office, he was right outside her door.

I use a mirror to take a look in the hall. He was looking in Kelly's office window and I step out with my gun drawn. I give him a head shot and he falls to the floor. Carrie and I checkout the hall and the shooter. The shooter was dead and the halls looked clear.

I knock on the door and call through the door. "Kelly, you can open the door. I'm here," I say in a soothing tone and moments later she opens the door. "Let us in, don't look. Keep your eyes on me."

She collapses in my arms and I carry her to her office couch. Carrie  closes the door and I check Kelly over. She had no vaginal bleeding, but her pulse was racing. Tears roll down my cheeks, relieved she and the twins were okay.
