Two weeks passed since the hidden truth of Jessica's affair came to light when Cassie's father broke into my house. Daisy has been sleeping in our room since. Even as a cop and an ex-marine I'm scared to sleep after hearing he's had a key to get in all this time without my knowledge.
Kelly has been stroking the scar on my abdomen every night to help me sleep. I find it soothing even when I start going into an anxiety attack. Carrie had to bring me to her the other day in the middle of a shift. A suspect we were arresting knew about Kelly and threatened to kill her if he got out of jail. Even though Jess cheated on me and Cassie wasn't mine, having the thought of losing Kelly and the twins scared me more than anything.
Carrie and I were granted permission to shadow her at the hospital until the suspect has his sentence hearing. So far in two days six people have tried to harm her and failed. I have taken down each attacker and each time Kelly's breaths hitch.
We were currently at the hospital with Kelly, walking towards the clinic for her first patient. There was a man, standing in the way of the examination room and he was glaring in Kelly's direction. The moment she came into his view, he started to aggressively approach her. I step in front of her and he grabs for me.
I deflect his grasp and he keeps trying to go through me to get to Kelly. He throws a punch at me and I grab his fist, twisting his arm hard, behind his back. "What is your reason for attacking Doctor Dawson," I ask in a protective growl, pushing his face into the wall.
"Derek sent me," he grunts in pain. "He said you'd know why I went after her."
"Did he tell you I was her new shadow," I ask as I cuff his hands behind his back.
"He left that detail out," he huffs in pain as I tighten the cuffs a little.
Carrie reads him his rights as she walks him away and I turn to Kelly. She had her eyes on me and her breaths hitch as I meet her eyes. She steps closer to me and comes in my arms. She was trembling slightly and I rub her back in comfort.
"I'm scared Jennifer, what if you haven't been shadowing me this week," she asks in a choked whisper, her hands grasping my shirt.
"All that matters is that I'm here and we never have to find that out," I say in a soothing whisper and kiss the top of her head. "I'm not going to let anyone or anything hurt you or our twins."
She breaks into uncontrolled sobs as Carrie returns from handing over Kelly's attacker. Carrie gives her a sympathetic look and comes to help calm her down. "You're in good hands, sweetie," Carrie says in a soothing whisper and Kelly lets out a calming breath. Her eyes meet mine and saw that I was scared too. "I informed Scully about what he said. He sent a car to check out your house."
"No need for that," I say in a protective tone and show her my phone. "I have my own eyes on the house. I installed them myself after what happened a few weeks ago."
"Jen, I want to go home," Kelly chokes in a scared whisper.
"Okay," I say in a soothing tone and spot Joyce walking towards us. "We just had another one, I'm taking her home."
"Keep me updated on this," she says softly and I nod. She rubs at Kelly's shoulders in comfort and says in a soothing tone, "Call me if you need anything."
"Thank you Joyce," Kelly chokes quietly and we leave.
She turns to Carrie as I open her car door and asks in a scared whisper, "Will you stay with us a few days, please?"
Carrie looks at me unsure what to say. "I'll owe you big time," I choke quietly. "I've been having trouble sleeping."
"I'd be happy to stay a few days," Carrie says softly and climbs in behind Kelly. "I could use some time away from my roommate anyway. She has guys over every night and I could use some sleep too."
