Chapter nineteen

A few weeks passed since I needed surgery to remove the bullet fragment from my chest on our wedding night. Kelly and I were at the hospital checking on the internal repair of my artery. My chest was fully healed within the last week and Devon was impressed. She was checking my artery with an ultrasound machine and scoffs in surprise. "I never had a patient heal this fast before," she says amazed, gently wiping away the gel from my chest.

"My mother always joked I had mutant DNA when I was a kid," I say with a smile as I fasten the buttons of my shirt.

"I still want you to take it easy a couple more weeks, but I don't think it'll hurt if you want to have a romantic evening with Kelly," she says with a sympathetic smile. 

Tears of relief fill my eyes and couldn't stop myself from hugging the other woman. "Thank you. You made it possible for me to even still be here," I choke with relief. 

"Kelly needs you," she says softly as I pull away to look at her. "I've seen a new side of Kelly since she met you and it was slipping away when she brought you in for surgery. I didn't want her to lose the only person whose treated her with the respect and love she deserves other than her family. You give her that Jennifer."

I nod lightly as tears roll down my cheeks. I leave the room and go looking for her getting an ultrasound for the twins. Claire spots me and waves me over to a room with concerned eyes. I flash a small smile and enter the room. Bryce was about to wipe off her stomach when Kelly asked her to let me see them.

I couldn't stop the tears from rolling down my cheeks at the image on the monitor. One of the twins had a thumb in their mouth and the other was wrapped at the other's back as if consoling their twin. "Jennifer," Kelly says softly and I look up at her. Concern burned like wildfire in her eyes and she asks, "Everything go okay with Devon?"

I answer her with a very passionate kiss and her breaths hitch. I break from the kiss and she had tears in her eyes, scared for me. "She's giving me a couple more weeks, but she said I should be okay with a romantic evening with my wife," I choke with a light smile.

She pulls me into another kiss, kissing me with a hunger I've been waiting for since our wedding night. "Save it for your bedroom," Bryce says with a laugh and Kelly pushes me away, breaths ragged from our heated kiss.

"Don't touch me until we get home," she says in a husky growl. 

Her eyes close, taking deep breaths to calm her hormones. Joyce pokes her head in and says without noticing Kelly's erratic breathing, "I'm sending Claire with you for the remaining two weeks just to make sure your healing is complete."

Without letting us reply she's gone as soon as she came in. Claire enters the room and asks, "Ready to go home?"

"Yes," Kelly says with a shuttering breath as she lets out a calming breath. "Will you help me out of this chair? If Jennifer touches me, I'll melt."

Claire bites her lip, fighting the smile and losing. "I take it Devon gave the okay for romance," she asks with a light laugh. 

I lean into Claire's ear and ask in a quiet whisper, "Would you like to join us?"

She clears her throat and goes to help Kelly out of the examination chair. Kelly rests her forehead on Claire's shoulder and lets out a shaky breath. "Kelly," Claire says with concern, placing her hands on Kelly's waist to support her balance. 

"I'm okay, just super sensitive," she says quietly in a seductive whisper. 

"Let's get you home," Claire says softly, helping Kelly walk out to my car.

I climb in the back and let Kelly ride up front with Claire. Claire meets my eyes in the review mirror and her breaths hitch. Kelly reaches over, rubbing at her thigh and Claire lets out a shuttering breath. "When was the last time you were with someone," Kelly asks in a husky whisper.
