We're not quite to the rough stuff yet, but this is going to be the closest thing to a 'pleasant' chapter for a minute. I will make sure to warn y'all of anything that might be particularly dark. We're already introducing the main man, though!

I will include translations in {} brackets right after. If anything is incorrect, please let me know. I am at the mercy of Google. There will be random words in German and Russian mostly. Enough of my rambling, please, enjoy!

"She's not nearly as pretty as the last one."

"No, but you can put the mask on her."

"I hate that thing. I'd rather peg the boss."

"I'm pretty sure that's treason."

"You're an idiot. I regret working with you Americans every time one of you open your mouths. I miss when Hydra was still at its best!"

"The new boss is American; remember that."

"I haven't forgotten. I have nothing but respect for the boss. He is what keeps us going. What I do not have respect for is dumb Americans like you, who can barely speak or read your own language."

"...This conversation is starting to feel a little personal. It was one book, Izak, and you know it!"

"You can barely read the reports, идиот {idiot}!"

The girl came-to with a massive headache. She had no idea how long she'd been asleep, but it must've been a while, as she was now locked in a room in an unknown building. As her eyes struggled to focus, she could make out the shape of a small table and what looked like a cot on the other side of the room. It could barely be called a room, and looked more like a cell. Or a Janitor's Closet. As her eyes cleared, she could see what looked like blood spatter on the walls and a few pairs of shackles. She moved to stand, but one of the many shackles were secured around each of her four limbs. Even if they weren't, she fell back down due to dizziness.

Someone had to've injected her with something, because she couldn't remember anything. Not where she was, why she was here, who had chained her, or even her own name. Her movements were sluggish at best, and her eyesight still wasn't completely clear. That might not have been due to what she was injected with, though. She couldn't remember who told her that and the more she tried to recall, the further it seemed to slip away. She had some disease that couldn't be fixed, according to some doctors she couldn't remember. She knew that by the time she hits her mid-30's, it had been estimated that she would be legally blind.

"It's my eyes."

She froze at the sound of the guards speaking once more outside the door she lay by. Could they have heard her thoughts, somehow? Surely not! It was impossible for someone to read minds!

...Right?

"What?"

"It's not that I can't read, it's my eyesight. I'm devoted to this job, but I can't afford glasses. I've got kids and my wife is putting them in every extracurricular activity she can-"

"Aren't your kids toddlers? They're too young for extracurriculars."

"Try telling her that! They're both in t-ball, gymnastics, and tap. I've got one that she's starting to put in commercials and the other wants to get into beauty pageants. I've had to explain to him that boys can't compete-"

"Why not?"

The girl sighed heavily. They definitely hadn't read her thoughts. Their conversation was entertaining enough, so she quieted down to listen while her body regained strength.
