Bucky and Mirjana, thankfully, didn't draw attention as they continued to race down the highway, going west. It seemed every officer within 50 miles was focused on what happened at the triskelion in DC. They drove for 7 hours before the car ran out of gas, and had no choice but to pull over. Bucky held Mirjana's hand as they made their way towards a nearby town, hoping for a motel. During her search of the car, she'd come across $50 and hoped that would be enough for a room for the night. They found a cheap motel, whose owner took pity and let her book the room. Bucky had to stay hidden outside, in case his image was flashed across the news.
They made their way to the room together, terrified to be apart for too long. Who knows who could be lurking out there, following them? They're not exactly easy prey, with Bucky being a highly trained assassin. That wouldn't stop any remaining Hydra members from trying, though. As they passed a room, she caught a glimpse of a newspaper sitting by the door. Desperate to know what was going on in the world, Mirjana grabbed it and shoved it under her arm. Bucky raised an eyebrow, but didn't say anything.
Their room wasn't anything fancy, but it was clean and had a bed and bathroom. Jana collapsed on the bed, emotions taking over her quickly now that there's the slightest sense of safety. Bucky was immediately by her side, encasing her in his sturdy arms.
"What's wrong?" he asked softly.
She shook her head, wiping her tears with the sleeves of her uniform. "I just, uh... the reality of everything. The fucking shock collar that had me terrified for years. And now, we're free. Really free... right?"
He meets her eyes while one hand comes up to softly cup her cheek. "Almost. There's one more thing, and we both know it's going to hurt."
Jana nodded with no hesitation. She trusted him completely. During their many years together he was the only one that she really could trust. Well, maybe Izak and Miller. To be honest they're mostly just idiots with no sense of right and wrong and good aim.
Were they still alive? Hopefully they weren't in the collapsed building.
Bucky rubbed his thumb across her cheek, eyes darting back and forth between her own amber eyes and pink lips. Despite not wanting to, she looked away to find a knife in one of their bags. She knew there was a sharp thin one in here somewhere, among the other medical equipment. It always reminded her of a scalpel, even though it technically wasn't one.
Bucky gently took the sharp object from her hands. "I'll do it. I'll try my best to match the scar. See if you can find needle and thread, too."
She nodded and began her new search. Being the one who normally had to patch him up, she knew exactly where they were. With the tools in hand – and some gauze – she faced her soldier once more. He stood and helped her up as well.
"What are-"
"It's in your leg, right?"
"Yes, right thigh."
"Then you'll need to take your pants off."
She gulped. Not just a cute, tiny one. No, it was loud enough for him to hear, revealing just what she was thinking. His hand came back up to stroke her cheek softly.
"Not tonight. We need to get the tracker out of you and get some rest so we can keep moving tomorrow. We're not out of the woods, yet," he apologized softly. She nodded, eyes not leaving his. Her hands – surprisingly not shaking – moved to the front zipper on her suit. It was a one piece, meaning she was going to have to take off nearly the whole thing just for him to get at her scar. She couldn't remember when she changed into it, but that didn't matter now.
