"Red," I nodded, outstretching my hand to help the woman I had just knocked to the ground.

I obviously hadn't meant to run into her, but shit—Maggie came crashing into me out of nowhere. Sounded almost like how she'd come back to town—sudden and hasty. I had to admit, I was intrigued when all the talk about Maggie started. I hadn't moved to town yet before she left and I didn't know what went down that was so bad it made her stay away all these years, but I was damn curious. Now putting a face to the name, I didn't know why everyone was so wary of her, she didn't seem all that crazy. Besides the fact that she'd shown up for the first time in years covered in the blood of the man she had just murdered. Beyond that one pesky detail, she seemed like a nice enough chick. She was small, probably not over five and a half feet, with red hair that matched Bear's exactly, along with the button nose her father also seemed to share. Her eyes were big, appearing more green than brown, but she definitely had a mix of both in there. She had full lips that you could just tell weren't that filler shit, which I decided came from Trudy since she shared the same feature. Overall, Maggie didn't look like she could hurt a fly—herself maybe, but not a grown-ass man who was twice her size. I had helped Mack look into this Owen guy while my brothers were in St. George, and by the looks of him, he could have easily overpowered Maggie without even trying. I didn't know the whole story, but I had a strong feeling there was more to it that Maggie was hiding. We all knew it, and from what everyone said about her, it was only a matter of time before it all came out and back to bite her in the ass.

I had seen my fair share of death and combat, I knew what it took to end a life, and while my details about what exactly happened were limited, given I was still only a prospect, I wasn't buying this. There was no way Maggie had killed Owen the way she said she had, at least not alone. I wanted to suggest the idea to Mick or Cash, but I knew as an unpatched member, my opinion wasn't worth shit yet. I had no proof, just experience with death and lies that made me believe we were missing something. Plus, it was Christmas, and I was sure that Bear didn't wanna hear any of this. Things were cleaned up for now—all of Maggie's actions were swept away and covered up. The blame was pointed at someone else, and Maggie would be free and clear from any wrongdoing if all went according to plan. It was what Bear wanted and I would respect that and keep my nose out of it.

I learned the hard way not to get involved in things that were above my pay grade, it only ever got me into trouble.

Taking my hand, Maggie used it as leverage to get back onto her feet. She straightened out the dress she was wearing and pulled it down so it lay flat against her. She looked cute in it, but it didn't seem like her. It fit her body in the traditional sense of the word, but it looked so wrong in every other way. Maggie seemed like a t-shirt and jeans kind of girl and I could tell she was uncomfortable in the dress she currently had on. It was too stuffy, too constricting for a girl like Maggie who liked feeling free.

"Shit—my bad," I mumbled, running a hand through my hair nervously. I wasn't sure why, but this woman intimidated me.

Sounded fucking hilarious coming from me, I know, but it was true. Wasn't I just saying she didn't seem scary?

I had seen and done a lot of horrible shit— stuff so bad, it was almost hard to fathom. Even still, I felt uneasy around Maggie. Maybe it was the fact that I knew she'd just killed a man in cold blood mere days ago, or maybe it was all the crazy stories and red flags I'd heard about her. Either way, she put me on edge—I didn't feel like myself.
